Mitski just dropped the new music video for “Star,” the second single off of her latest album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We.

The singer initially started teasing the video last Wednesday, cryptically posting a few seconds of silent, black-and-white footage to her social media, and then another clip the following day. Both videos were accompanied only by the date April 23. Then on Friday, Mitski officially announced that she would be releasing a music video for “Star,” releasing another short clip that was styled like a film poster.

Directed by Megan Houang, who has also directed three other music videos for Mitski, the full video for “Star” is a vaguely surreal black-and-white vision. We see the singer slowly rowing a boat along a misty river, with a mountain range shrouded in fog in the background.

“Remember when we met / We acted like two fools / We were so glad / So glad to have found it,” she sings quietly, accompanied by minimal synths that build slowly over the course of the song, until her voice is almost lost amid both electronic and orchestral sounds.

Mitski rowing alone through dark waters is the perfect visual accompaniment to a song about a final, desperate attempt to prevent the breakdown of a long-term relationship. The last shot, of her arm floating in the water, is especially haunting.

This is the third music video that the singer has released for her seventh studio album, which came out last September to rave reviews. Mitski's tour is continuing to bring stunning visuals and choreography to match. Last November, she announced that she was writing the music and lyrics for a stage musical adaptation of the Netflix show The Queen’s Gambit. And last but certainly not least, the singer will be making her festival headline debut at All Points East in London this fall.

We love to see Mitski booked and busy.
