The recent deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police officers, combined with the fatal attacks on police officers in Dallas, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, have placed a bigger lens on the issue of the nationwide police force’s contentious relationship with the African-American community. It has also amplified the ongoing conversation of gun violence and the issue of gun control in America. Since then, a chorus of celebrity voices have come out rallying for peace amidst the ongoing state of unrest that continues to plague our nation. Just this weekend R&B singer Miguel again addressed the ongoing issue of police brutality, after speaking on it previously at the Wireless Festival in London.

During his set at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago’s Union Park, the singer spoke with defiant integrity about the need to take action in the face of ongoing police brutality. “I’m tired of human lives turned into hashtags and prayer hands,” he said. “We are facing ourselves as a nation, as a race of humans, we are facing our worst habits. And it’s time. It is time now to make a difference. It is time now to act or change, because we all have the possibility of having and raising our very own children who can possibly die innocently.”
