Michael Cera’s cream wins the Super Bowl

Unlike the game, where the number of points scored determines a clear champion, it is up for debate about which ad truly “won” the game. But a case could be made for “Barbie” and “Arrested Development” actor Michael Cera’s whacked-out commercial for CeraVe skincare products.

The weirdness began, as so many things do, in the darkest corners of the internet, where, as many as seven years ago some probably very stoned people on Reddit thought it would be funny to connect the actor’s last name to the product. This continued for a while, until, in recent weeks, Cera was seen hanging out in Brooklyn pharmacies, signing tubs of the stuff. (The New York Times later revealed that this was all part of a planned campaign.)

And on Sunday, it all erupted out. The ad, directed by the comic duo of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim with a distinctive “Tim and Eric” feel, positions Cera as the fountainhead for all the cream that makes our skin feel so fresh. “Let my cream hydrate you,” Cera implores, much to the delight of social media users.

The ad concludes with the reveal that Cera is actually pitching the CeraVe execs, who aren’t into it.

CeraVe, owned by L’Oreal, makes an array of moisturizers, ointments, cleansers, and lotions, and boasts “ceramides” in its formula. These are actually fat compounds. The dark secret of the beauty industry!
