“Riverdale truly was my Juilliard,” declared Charles Melton in a revealing interview with i-D magazine in mid-December to promote his new movie “May December.” “I learned so much being there. I formed relationships that I will have until the end of my days. It really helped me refine this work ethic.” His co-star in this acclaimed film by Todd Haynes is Julianne Moore, who won an Emmy for her stint on “As the World Turns” in the 1980s.

She too knew that soap operas are a great way for young actors to refine and develop their craft. As they shoot an large number of scenes each day with minimal takes, actors have to rapidly learn to memorise a lot of lines, seamlessly hit their marks, effortlessly summon heightened emotion, and be efficient and consistent in their quality of performance.

If, indeed, it was Melton’s time as Reggie Mantle on The CW’s “Riverdale” that helped him deliver his heartbreaking performance in “May December,” there will no doubt be a line out the door when it comes to casting the next teen drama. His quietly devastating work was met with a remarkable reception.

He reaped both Critics Choice and Golden Globe bids. Although he was snubbed by SAG and BAFTA, here are 5 reasons why we think he is still on track to earn his first Oscar nomination.

Melton would be a passion pick
He has racked up nominations from a whopping 40 critics groups. Of these, Melton has won 10, including both the New York and National Society. Plus he won the gender-neutral Best Supporting Performance at the Gotham Awards. Such recognition indicates passion for his performance. Being able to gather a pocket of #1 votes trumps a sleeve of #4s and #5s.

He has a great Oscar clip
Although his work is largely quiet and internal, there are moments in the movie where he’s really able to flex his chops. In particular, there is a scene on the roof where he has a breakdown while talking to his son. Having memorable moments like these helps you to stick out and stay in the minds of voters long after the credits roll.

Melton’s co-star will be nominated
While Melton remains 5th in our combined odds, so do does his co-star, Moore. She too contended at the Globes and CCA. Samy Burch is also in 5th place for Original Screenplay as is Such interest means ore voters will watch your film and your name will remain in the conversation.

He undergoes a physical transformation
Melton packed on 40 pounds to play the part. His regarded chiselled jawline and toned physique were nowhere to be seen in “May December.” Voters have always had a soft spot for actors transforming themselves for parts. It’s a challenge understood and respected by one’s peers.

The Netflix factor
The streamer is especially good at getting actors nominated. Since their first with Mary J. Blige (“Mudbound”) in 2018, Netflix has since reaped 25 acting bids. The campaign for “May December” has been highly visible.
