In an interview with Variety ahead of its U.S release, Galitizine said he believes the sex on the show is “really integral to the plot and not just salacious.” While he also feels a genuine love developed between George and the king, “George’s appetite couldn’t be satiated.”

The show has received rave reviews this month, with Variety TV critic Alison Herman describing it as “darkly comic and lushly erotic, both boldly anachronistic and surprisingly true to history.”
