Watch: Mark Wahlberg Faces Disaster in 'Deepwater Horizon' Trailer

By Dave McNary

Lionsgate has released the first teaser-trailer for Deepwater Horizon with several scenes recreating the massive 2010 explosion that killed 11 men working on the platform.

Most of the trailer focuses on the daughter of a couple — played by Mark Walberg and Kate Hudson — who explains the specifics of oil drilling with an exploding can of Coca-Cola and asking her dad for a fossil so she can show how Wahlberg’s character “tames the dinosaurs.”

The rest of the trailer contains the oil rig workers realizing that something is amiss in the few minutes before the rig explodes, followed by several scenes of the massive fires that raged for three months before the gusher was capped.

Wahlberg plays an electrician on the oil rig. John Malkovich, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez and Dylan O’Brien also star. The movie will mark the first onscreen pairing of Russell with Hudson.

Lionsgate and Participant Media are teaming on the film, directed by Peter Berg from Matthew Michael Carnahan’s script. In 2011 the companies acquired feature rights to The New York Times article Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hour, written by David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul.

Producers are Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and David Womark.

Lionsgate has set a Sept. 30 release date.
