What to watch March 8, 20224: Movie awards contenders

Down to the wire, awards movies are still being rolled out on digital platforms. Two cherished nominees — one an international film, the other a documentary — have debuted this week. Even though it won’t affect either movie’s Oscar odds (voting closed last week), their premieres should be a blessing to all the completists out there. 

The contender to watch this week: “Perfect Days”

Three-time Oscar nominee Wim Wenders directed this sublime slice-of-life drama about an unassuming Tokyo janitor (Koji Yakusho) with a quiet daily routine that includes watering his seedlings, visiting the same stores and restaurants, and choosing a cassette tape to hear on his drive to work. (Get ready for a great soundtrack: Nina Simone, Patti Smith, The Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, and more.) “Perfect Days” follows two weeks in the protagonist’s life, one of which involves a series of disruptions that rattle his stasis. The movie will compete for Best International Feature Film at Sunday’s Oscars. It’s currently playing in a handful of theaters, but you can also rent or purchase it on VOD. 

Other contenders:

  • “To Kill a Tiger“: Nisha Pahuja‘s powerful film managed to get a Best Documentary Feature nomination without a distributor, capitalizing on festival buzz and celebrity producers like Dev Patel and Mindy Kaling. Netflix bought “To Kill a Tiger” just a couple of weeks ago, adding Priyanka Chopra Jonas to the list of famous EP’s. The movie follows an Indian farmer seeking justice after his 13-year-old daughter becomes the victim of a gang rape. 

  • “Poor Things“: After debuting on VOD last week, the year’s second-most-nominated Oscar darling is newly streaming on Hulu. 

  • “Wonka“: No need to travel to Glasgow when there’s a Willy Wonka experience just a few clicks away. Simply look around and view it on Max. The prequel’s awards trajectory stalled with one Golden Globe nomination (for Timothée Chalamet) and one BAFTA nod (for Outstanding British Film), but its large box-office haul more than makes up for the snubs.

  • “Space: The Longest Goodbye”: Could we have an early contender for 2024’s documentary Oscar on our hands? Ido Mizrahy‘s film chronicles astronauts preparing to go to Mars, but it’s really about the psychological isolation they’ll face during the mission. After premiering at Sundance in January, the movie is now playing in select theaters and available to rent on VOD. It’ll stream on PBS in May. 

  • “Argylle”: It’s hardly an awards candidate, but the spy comedy starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and Dua Lipa has hit VOD.
