Well, it’s over. Now that the 2024 film awards season is in the rearview mirror, the onslaught of prestige titles hitting digital platforms will come to a temporary halt. Thankfully, this week still brings a pretty decent crop of new releases.

The contender to watch this week: “Drive-Away Dolls

Ethan Coen‘s second movie without Joel — his first was the documentary “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” which is streaming exclusively on Prime Video — has posted modest box-office returns, but the breezy road comedy seems destined for cult-favorite status. Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan play friends who get caught up in a band of maladroit criminals during a road trip down South. Co-written with Tricia Cooke, who edited “The Big Lebowski” and other Coen-brother movies, “Drive-Away Dolls” also features Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and newly minted Oscar nominee Colman Domingo. It’s available to rent or purchase on VOD.

Other contenders:

  • “Frida”: Eschewing certain documentary conventions, director Carla Gutiérrez, who previously edited “RBG” and HBO’s “Julia,” uses Frida Kahlo’s personal writings to tell her life story. Intimate letters Kahlo wrote become first-person narration, which Gutiérrez blends with animated treatments of her famous art. “Frida” premiered at Sundance in January, and it’s now streaming on Prime Video.

  • “The Animal Kingdom”: Thomas Cailley‘s French sci-fi adventure outpaced “Anatomy of a Fall” to collect the most César Award nominations this year, largely because of its technical prowess. In a world where humans are mutating into animals, the movie follows a man (Romain Duris) attempting to save his wife (Adèle Exarchopoulos) from this interspecies condition. The film opened in France last year and is now available on VOD.

  • Dream Scenario“: Nicolas Cage nabbed a Golden Globe nomination for his hilarious performance as a meek biology professor who becomes a viral celebrity when he starts showing up in strangers’ dreams for no clear reason. This was the second-best movie that Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli made last year, the first being “Sick of Myself” (currently available on Paramount+ with Showtime). Watch it on Max.

  • “Madame Web”: An awards contender? LOL. The highly ridiculed superhero bomb has now debuted on VOD, one month after it hit theaters.

“Household Saints”: Lili Taylor won an Independent Spirit Award for her affectionate, intense performance as a devout Catholic who hopes to be canonized in Nancy Savoca‘s 1993 dramedy. “Saints,” which stars Tracey Ullman and Vincent D’Onofrio as Taylor’s perplexed parents, was recently restored after years of being unavailable. You can watch it on VOD.
