What to watch January 19, 2023: Movie awards contenders

The final countdown is on. The BAFTA nominations are in, which means all the precursors are accounted for – aside from the delayed Writers Guild Awards. One of the last major Oscar players made its digital debut the same day that voting ended. Will that put the movie at the top of Academy members’ minds?

The contender to watch this week: “The Color Purple

One of the lingering questions ahead of next week’s Oscar nominations is how “The Color Purple” will fare. The newest adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer-winning novel has been up and down throughout precursor season, but its two SAG Award nods — particularly the venerated ensemble prize — could hint at a decent haul. The surest bet is newly BAFTA-recognized Danielle Brooks, reprising her barn-burning role from the Broadway production. Otherwise, the movie could show up in Best Costume Design, Best Original Score (it is a musical after all), Best Production Design, and Best Picture. For now, rent or purchase it on VOD.

Other contenders:

  • Fallen Leaves“: Alma Pöysti earned a surprise Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Aki Kaurismäki‘s dry comedy about two loners slowly coming together in Helsinki. If it’s not too soft-spoken for Oscar voters’ taste, “Fallen Leaves” could nab a spot in Best International Feature Film. For now, it’s available on Mubi.

  • The Boys in the Boat“: Most of the movies George Clooney has directed since “Good Night, and Good Luck” have faded into awards-season oblivion, though Ben Affleck did receive Golden Globe and SAG nominations for 2021’s “The Tender Bar.” Clooney’s latest, a true story about an Olympics-bound college rowing team during the Great Depression, never stood a chance, despite a plum December release. Anyone hungry for old-fashioned triumph can rent the aptly titled “Boys in the Boat” on VOD.

  • “The Marvels”: The live-action superhero slot in this year’s Best Visual Effects contest will probably go to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” leaving this latest Marvel underperformer out in the cold. But “The Marvels” is available for purchase on VOD ahead of a future Disney+ launch.

  • “Dumb Money”: Craig Gillespie‘s under-seen comedy about the great GameStop stock drama of 2021 is streaming on Netflix as of Sunday.
