Yes, folks, it's finally happening. Wild Mountain Thyme aka the weirdest rom-com known to man is coming out in the UK. If you haven't already heard about it, don't worry, we won't spoil it for you.
But if you want to know why everyone has gone bananas over Wild Mountain Thyme, you can read our spoiler-laden twist ending explainer. Presuming, however, that you want to watch the film without knowing what the various twists and turns are, keep on reading.
The story of Wild Mountain Thyme follows the passionate, determined and smart, Rosemary Muldoon (Emily Blunt) who has been in love with her neighbour Anthony Reilly (Jamie Dornan) since they were 10 years old.
It seems that everyone in their farming community knows they were meant for each other — except Anthony. An eccentric introvert, Anthony has spent his entire life working on the family farm alongside his father Tony (Christopher Walken).
The ageing Tony blindsides Anthony with his plan to sell the farm to Adam (Jon Hamm), his wealthy American nephew because he doubts his son has what it takes to run it. And when Adam comes to visit, his obvious interest in Rosemary complicates the situation further.
With everything that’s important to him about to slip through his fingers, Anthony has to move quickly, but a series of losses and his own certainty that he is unloveable leaves his future — and Rosemary’s — in doubt. It seems like a simple enough story on the face of it, but trust us when we tell you it's whacky.
The trailer alone brought out some strong feelings. From the reactions to Christopher Walken's accent to the bizarre timing of the movie (it is, in fact, set in the present day despite looking for the most part like a period drama), people had a lot of feelings about the movie.
And it lived up to its hype — and by hype we mean it being completely and totally bizarre. The film has a 30% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience rating just slightly higher at 52%.
Roger Ebert.com wrote: "Over and over again, you won't know whether to feel baffled or amused — although, by the end, the former feeling most assuredly dominates the latter" and the New York Times said: "A romantic comedy/drama whose tone ping-pongs from grave to lyrical to absurdist willy-nilly, and hits all those registers at fortissimo volume."
There were some positive takes though, with many citing its unadulterated escapism and the performance of its leads as assuredly watchable. Now, however, you'll get to be the judge of that.
Wild Mountain Thyme will be out across a variety of Video on Demand platforms from April 30 in the UK. That means you can watch it on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, the Microsoft Store, and more.
On most of these sites, the movie costs £13.99 to rent, which means you'll only have it for a limited amount of time. On Amazon, the rental period includes 30 days to start watching Wild Mountain Thyme, with 48 hours to finish it once you've started. Totally worth it.
