The prequel to Game of Thrones has been a long time coming for those who were disappointed in the initial series finale, which wrapped back in summer 2019. But even before then, George R. R. Martin had released another book in the GoT saga titled Fire & Blood in 2018 that depicted the rise of the Targaryen family, and their ultimate demise. Now, fans of GoT (and newcomers to Westeros) have been enthralled with the book’s much-anticipated adaptation: House of the Dragon.

The series is set 200 years before Game of Thrones during a time of peace in the Seven Kingdoms — but not for long. House of the Dragon documents the last surviving Dragonriders of the world, and the ruling family of Westeros, the House Targaryen. So far, the series has focused on Rhaenyra Targaryen, who begins the season as the princess of Westeros. The show will dive into the epically bloody civil war, the “Dance of Dragons,” and the reason for the House Targaryen’s feeble numbers in GoT.

House of the Dragon: Number of Episodes, Cast

The first season of House of the Dragon from creator-showrunners Ryan J. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik includes 10 episodes. This new series will feature cast members Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Milly Alcock, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emily Carey, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans.

Starting with Episode 6, which aired on September 25, House of the Dragon saw a major casting shake-up as the show jumped forward ten years. Most notably, Emma D’Arcy took the reins from Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Olivia Cooke replaced Emily Carey as Alicent. Some of the cast remains the same, including Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen.

Will There Be a House of the Dragon Season 2?

If you’ve been enjoying the GoT prequel thus far, here’s some good news: House of Dragon has officially been renewed for Season 2, with the news coming just days after the show’s first episode came out on HBO Max.

The prequel series’ renewal did not surprise anyone, as the first episode raked in a dragon-sized 25 million viewers during its first week. However, fans were surprised to hear that co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik will be leaving House of the Dragon after the first season to work on other HBO projects.
