Watch Foo Fighters & Zac Brown March Out Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’ on ‘Letterman’

Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters kicked off a weeklong residency at Late Show With David Letterman on Monday, and enlisted Zac Brown to help them through their first song — a cover of Black Sabbath’s 1970 heavy metal blueprint, “War Pigs.”

Don’t think Zac Brown can’t get a little heavy. From curating and playing his annual Southern Ground Music & Food Festival, Brown is no stranger to a little cross-genre collaboration, and he sounds right at home growling about black masses in the opening lines. But few rock frontmen can let out a growl like Grohl, who takes over vocal duties later on. Drummer Taylor Hawkins puts on quite a show, too.

The Foos are hanging out with Letterman this week to promote their upcoming “love letter to the history of American music,” Sonic Highways, which drops Nov. 10. The album will come to life through a complementary HBO documentary series, which chronicles the band’s travels across America (each song was recorded in a different city) and Grohl’s interviews with a succession of musical icons. The series premieres Oct. 17.

And in Black Sabbath news, Ozzy Osbourne announced back in September that the band will began working on its final album in early 2015.
