Everything You Need to Know About 'Yellowstone', Including When Season 5 Returns

Paramount revealed Yellowstone's return date during the action-packed mid-season finale.

Yellowstone is the Paramount Network's sole original scripted series currently, but who needs another? The show has been a ratings juggernaut—it was the No. 1 series of 2021 across broadcast, cable and premium, with a staggering 11 million average viewers tuning in each week. And not surprisingly, Paramount swiftly renewed the series for season 5 and upped guest stars Jen Landon (Teeter) and Kathryn Kelly (Emily) to series regulars.

The modern-day Western premiered in 2018 as a kickoff of sorts for the network's rebrand (it was formerly Spike TV) and clearly hit a cultural nerve. Set in Montana, the series follows trials and tribulations of the Dutton family, who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the U.S.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner as patriarch John Dutton, a man trying to keep the ranch in the family as they clash with land developers, a neighboring Indian reservation and several other foes on their quest to protect their legacy.

“Yellowstone continues to shatter records with more than 11 million viewers tuning in for the season finale, proving we’ve hit a cultural nerve—from the center of the country to each of the coasts—and still have lots of room to grow on linear,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO, ViacomCBS Media Networks. “Our strategy to franchise Yellowstone into a universe of series to fuel growth for Paramount+ is already exceeding expectations with 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown proving to be two of the top titles.”

And if you're wondering whether there will be more spinoffs, Costner said on the 2022 Oscars red carpet, “I have no doubt there’ll be more spin-offs.

“I didn’t even know about the spin-offs that were coming,” he added. “I just kind of do my thing, hit my marks, and go, ‘Wow, this thing is really going well.’”

With several cliffhangers at the end of season 4, we're still waiting for what the teaser trailer proclaimed for season 5: "all will be revealed."

Will there be a Yellowstone season 5?

Absolutely! There was no doubt that Paramount would renew the series for season 5. The No. 1 cable series of 2021 consistently gets top ratings and the viewership grows with each episode. It is currently the highest-rated cable network television show and is tied to spinoff series 1883 and the upcoming 1923.

When did Yellowstone season 5 begin filming?

Paramount announced on May 16 that filming for Yellowstone season 5 had begun in Montana. This news follows Taylor Sheridan's earlier statement to Deadline that filming would begin in May 2022.

Is there a Yellowstone season 5 release date?

The Duttons returned to the Paramount Network when Part 1 of Yellowstone premiered Sunday, Nov. 13. The mid-season finale was Jan. 1, 2023. Part 2 of Yellowstone season 5 will return in Summer 2023.

When will the next Yellowstone marathon run on the Paramount Network?

Paramount network usually runs marathons over long holiday weekends. The most recent opportunity to binge every episode of the first four seasons of Yellowstone was over New Year's weekend.

Who is in the Yellowstone cast?

Kevin Costner (John Dutton)

Kevin Costner plays Dutton patriarch, John Dutton. He's a rancher and businessman trying to keep his family from breaking apart at the seams while he also trying to hold onto the Dutton land. After months in a coma from his attempted assassination in the season 3 finale, he wakes to find not much has changed. In his bid to stop Jamie from becoming too powerful, he decides to run for governor after the current governor (and sometimes-love-interest), Lynelle Perry (Wendy Moniz) decides to step down and run for a U.S. Senate seat.

Fun fact: Costner is also the lead singer in the band, Kevin Costner & Modern West.

Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton)

Barely surviving the mail bomb that blasted her office (and presumably her assistant) to bits, Beth spent most of her time recuperating by sitting vigil by her father's bedside as she plotted her revenge on those who meant to harm her and her family.

Everything Beth does is either for her father or for Rip. In season 4, she took a job with Market Equities in order to bring them down from the inside. In her efforts to do so she manipulates social activist Summer (Piper Perabo) to do her bidding and gets her jailed in the process, much to her father's disappointment.

Rip keeps her grounded and in check and the two take in orphan Carter to continue with the dysfunctional Dutton family theme. In the season finale, she kidnaps a priest to officiate her wedding to Rip and then puts the screws into Jamie.

Fun fact: The British Reilly starred opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in two Sherlock Holmes movies, Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), as Mary, Watson’s paramour and eventual wife (they marry in the second film).

Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton)

In the season 4 opener, Kayce survives the ambush at his Livestock Commissioner's office only to get shot in the ensuing car chase and shootout. While Kayce is out chasing the bad guys, some of the hired militia invade the Dutton home, meaning to harm his wife and child. When both Monica and Tate suffer from PTSD in the aftermath, he decides to move them off the ranch and into a home of their own.

He goes on a vision quest at the end of season 4 and the future he sees doesn't seem to be a happy one. When Monica asks what he saw, he tells her, "The end of us."

Fun fact: Aside from Yellowstone, Grimes is best known for his roles on the ABC series Brothers & Sisters, and films American Sniper and Fifty Shades of Grey, where he played the main character’s brother, Elliot.

Wes Bentley (Jamie Dutton)

Jamie is a puppet whose strings are being pulled every which way. Before it was John Dutton pulling his strings, now it's Garrett Randall (Will Patton) and on some occasions Beth or his baby mama, Christina.

When John Dutton announces his bid for governor, his adopted son Jamie, who dreamed of winning the seat, is beside himself (and ripe for more manipulation) until both Garrett and Christina convince him that he can still win.

After Beth confronts him about the attack on the family and what consequences are waiting for him, she gives him three options as to what he can do next. He chooses option three and kills Garrett. When he makes a stop at the Train Station, Beth is there to take photos of him disposing of the body and essentially takes the puppet strings into her hands.

Fun fact: Bentley played gamemaker Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games.

Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler)

Rip may not say much but when he does, it's either romantic or a hard truth. He's one of the few people who isn't afraid of Beth. In fact, he seems more amused by her than anything else. He isn't too happy when Beth brings a stray home in the form of little orphan Carter, but by season's end he takes a shine to him.

Fun fact: Cole Hauser comes from an entertainment family—his dad is actor Wings Hauser, his uncle is actor Erich Hauser and his grandfather is director and producer Dwight Hauser. His mother, Cass Warner, founded the production company Warner Sisters and his great-grandfather was Harry Warner, one of the original founders of Warner Bros. Studios.

Finn Little (Carter)

What can you say about this little rapscallion? He befriends Beth when the two sit on a hospital bench waiting for progress reports on their respective fathers. When his dies and he is left an orphan, Beth eventually takes him in after he is picked up by the cops and tells them she's his guardian.

As you can see, Finn Little had a bit of a growth spurt between filming season 4 and 5. He's barely unrecognizable from the young boy we saw last season. The teenager now looks a bit like a young Rip Wheeler.

Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton) and Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton)

In the fourth season premiere, Monica is about to be killed by one of the intruders when Tate kills him with a shotgun. Both are traumatized from the events of the day (and Tate still suffers lingering effects from being kidnapped) and staying on the ranch doesn't seem to help matters. As they move off the ranch, the two seem to be much happier with Tate thriving. Monica announces she's pregnant before Kayce goes on his vision quest.

Fun facts: Asbille's first television role was on One Tree Hill. This is Merrill's first television role.

Forrie J. Smith (Lloyd Pierce)

Lloyd saw red most of the season as his anger slowly boiled beneath the surface at having to watch Walker and Laramie canoodling with each other in the bunkhouse. When his anger finally reached its boiling point, he smashed not only Walker's guitar but also his face. He makes amends by pawning a prized possession in order to buy Walker a new guitar.

Fun fact:Smith’s son, Forrest, played a younger version of Lloyd in some flashback scenes on the show.

Ryan Bingham (Walker)

Walker got on the wrong side of Lloyd this past season as he continued his relationship with Laramie, much to Lloyd's chagrin. After the two fight in the bunkhouse, Rip makes the two hash it out again in the corral until there's no more fight left in them. Branded and forever tied to the ranch, Walker tries to make the best of his situation by keeping his head down and doing his job.

Fun fact: Kevin Costner isn’t the only one in the Yellowstone cast with an Academy Award. Bingham scored an Oscar for co-writing the 2010 Best Original Song “I’m Weary” with T Bone Burnett for the film Crazy Heart.

Jen Landon (Teeter)

The mostly incomprehensible Teeter was unceremoniously fired mid-season 4 because she was of the wrong gender. She makes her case to John to keep her job with Rip's backing and is eventually given a stay of execution. Expect to see more of her in season 5 as she's been upped to a series regular.

Jen Landon is the daughter of Little House on the Prairie’s Michael Landon and starred opposite him in an episode of Highway to Heaven when she was just 5.

Fun fact: Landon has won three consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for her role as Gwen Munson on As the World Turns. She also has a recurring guest starring role on FBI: Most Wanted.

Denim Richards (Colby)

Colby is a longtime ranch hand at Yellowstone. He and Teeter have a thing going on but he's not one for labels (or actually admitting to it).

Ian Bohen (Ryan)

Ryan is one of the bunkhouse boys and whether intentional or not, seems to be a bit of comic relief with his dry wit and acerbic manner.

Fun fact:Yellowstone isn’t the first time Bohen has starred in a project with Kevin Costner. He played a teenage version of Costner’s titular character in the Oscar nominated film, Wyatt Earp.

Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater)

We didn't get to see much of the leader of the Broken Rock Indian Reservation in season 4. While his efforts to take back the Dutton land for his people seem to be on the back burner for now, it's bound to resurface at some point.

Fun fact: Birmingham was a petrochemical engineer before he got into acting.

Moses Brings Plenty (Mo)

Mo is Rainwater’s everyman, serving as his driver and assistant and all things in between. This season he takes on a larger role as he helps Kayce on his vision quest. Brings Plenty has been upped to series regular for season 5.

Fun fact:We get a glimpse of Mo's family this season in the episode "All I See is You". That is Brings Plenty's real-life wife and son!

Kathryn Kelly (Emily)

In one of the more surprising announcements with the season 5 renewal was the addition of Kathryn Kelly as a regular cast. The British actress, who plays Jimmy's fiancé, was only in four episodes of season 4. Could this mean that we'll get a wedding in season 5 too?

Are any Yellowstone season 4 recurring characters returning?

We'll likely see several of these characters returning in some capacity next season, though there are some we probably won't.

Jefferson White (Jimmy Hurdstrom)

With some growing up to do and getting seriously injured twice, Jimmy is sent down to Texas to the 6666 Ranch to learn how to be a cowboy. He returns to the Yellowstone with John's horse and his new fiancée, Emily (Kathryn Kelly). His return is brief as John lets him out of any debt owed to him and he heads back down to Texas with Emily.

It's long been rumored that White would be part of the cast of the Yellowstone spinoff series, 6666. Though no official statement has been made regarding this, the story arc for his character would seem to substantiate it.

Wendy Moniz (Gov. Lynelle Perry)

Gov. Lynelle Perry recently announced that she is running for U.S. Senate and putting her backing behind John Dutton as the next governor of Montana.

Wendy Moniz has been upped to series regular for season 5. Moniz also guest stars on FBI: Most Wanted as a judge and love interest for the Remy Scott (Dylan McDermott), the new leader of the special task force.

Jacki Weaver (Caroline Warner)

With Caroline Warner’s vicious threats to Beth promising she’ll take everything precious including natural resources, wildlife and the Dutton home from her, look for Weaver to continue to wreak havoc on Beth's life and that of the Duttons.

Piper Perabo (Summer Higgins)

Summer got a hefty sentence for her troubles, much to Beth's delight initially and much to John's displeasure. After John talks it out with the judge, it looks like she'll get a shortened sentence of about a year for which she'll be out of jail in eight months. Depending on when the show's timeline picks up again next season, we may see Summer leaving jail just in time to plot her revenge against Beth—and giving John the loving he needs. On the SAG Awards red carpet, Perabo told People, “The love story is kicking into gear on Yellowstone" in season 5.

Q'orianka Kilcher (Angela Blue Thunder)

Expect to see Q'orianka Kilcher return as Angela Blue Thunder, Rainwater's legal counsel and fixer. Will she ultimately help John Dutton and his fight to preserve the Dutton land or will she side with Market Equities?

Eden Brolin (Mia) and Hassie Harrison (Laramie)

The two barrel racers were fired (did anyone realize they were even on the payroll?) after Lloyd and Walker's fight with Mia leaving to go back on the road. After spending weeks helping Jimmy recuperate, she gives him yet another ultimatum and he assumes they're over. When he returns from Texas with a new fiancée in tow, Mia loses it and loses it again after she watches Jimmy head out of town for good.

Laramie seems to still be with Walker but she may have to join Mia again on the road since her previous source of income has dried up.

It's unclear if Brolin will return (perhaps only as an occasional guest star), but it's likely we'll see Harrison again next season.

Will Patton (Garrett Randall)

Unless we see Garrett in flashback scenes next season, it's unlikely we'll see much more of Will Patton on the show unless he returns as a ghost to haunt Jamie for killing him.

Gabriel "Gator" Guillbeau (Gator the Cook)

We only saw Gator once or twice this season, but since he's the Dutton's head (and only) chef and the production's actual caterer, we're likely to see him again in season 5.

Sheriff Donnie Haskell (Hugh Dillon)

As the character is now six feet under, it's unlikely we'll see the sheriff unless it is in a flashback scene. In reality, Dillon likely had to step back from his acting duties on Yellowstone for his more prominent acting duties on Mayor of Kingstown where he plays detective Ian Ferguson. He is also the show's co-creator, writer and producer.

Christina (Katherine Cunningham)

Jamie's former campaign manager and current baby mama returned this season as Garrett worked his puppet strings to manipulate his son. It's unclear whether or not we'll see Christina in the upcoming season and if she'll be the one to hold the puppet strings now.

Are any new cast members joining Yellowstone season 5?

Along with Brings Plenty and Moniz who have be upped to series regulars look for the following new faces in season 5 of Yellowstone.

Josh Lucas (Young John Dutton)

Lucas, who most recently starred in Spectrum Originals' Long Slow Exhale, will reprise his role as a young John Dutton. Lucas previously starred in the films Sweet Home Alabama and Ford v. Ferrari. He has previously guest starred on Will & Grace and Empire Falls.

Kylie Rogers (Young Beth Dutton)

Looks like we'll learn more about Beth and Rip from years past!

Kyle Red Silverstein (Young Rip Wheeler)

It appears there are more flashback scenes in the works and hopefully, we'll get to see more of Rip's upbringing (or lack thereof).

Kai Caster (Rowdy)

Caster will play a "young cowboy" on the show. No more details have been revealed but perhaps he will be butting heads with Carter (Finn Little)?

Lainey Wilson (Abby)

Abby is a musician. Will she be a possible love interest for Walker (Ryan Bingham)? If so, perhaps they'll go on the road together? This would provide a perfect segue for Walker to head down to the 6666 where his character is rumored to join that Yellowstone spinoff series. Or will she romance one of the other Bunkhouse Boys? We'll have to tune in to see!

Fun fact: Wilson was recently honored as 2022 CMT Breakout Artist of the Year.

Lilli Kay (Clara Brewer)

Clara is a new assistant for one of the Duttons. Odds are she'll be Beth's new assistant. As we've seen with Beth's previous assistant and their lack of longevity, will Clara be the one to stick it out and literally dodge a bullet (or mail bomb)?

Dawn Olivieri (Sarah Atwood)

Sarah Atwood is a confident, corporate shark and new arrival to Montana. Is she a new player for Market Equities and Caroline Weaver? Or is she a third party with an eye on the Dutton Land? Whoever she is, she'll likely be a new foil for Beth. Olivieri previously appeared on 1883 as Claire Dutton, the sister of James Dutton (Tim McGraw).

Tanaya Beatty (Avery)

Before there was Teeter, Laramie or Mia, there was Avery. She was the first girl in the bunkhouse and worked as a ranch hand on the Yellowstone. While her character is not new, we suspect we'll see more of Avery in the next season. She was in a handful of episodes in the first two seasons and her character all but disappears in season 3 but returned last season when Kayce helps her family recover some stolen horses. She confesses her love to Kayce and while flattered, Kayce tells her he's married. Though she appears to resign herself to a lonely existence after Kayce politely rebuffs her, it's Avery that Kayce dreams of kissing him during his vision quest.

How Is Tim McGraw's 1883 Character Related to John Dutton?

In bonus material that accompanied the Yellowstone season 4 Blu-ray release, Tim McGraw says he's the great-great grandfather of modern-day John Dutton:

"I play John Dutton’s great-great-grandfather," he said. "Our family is the first to discover Yellowstone and settle it. And in doing that, we are the first to really defend it and fight people off, and try to establish it and then survive. J.D.’s the patriarch of the family. He’s the guy that had the balls, I guess, to set out and take his family across the country and head up to Montana, and sorta settle this unknown land, this untamed land up there, and turn it into something."

Where does Yellowstone film?

In seasons 1-3, the show filmed in Utah and Montana but due to the pandemic and COVID restrictions, the season 4 was filmed entirely in Montana. Season 5 followed the same protocol.

Is the Dutton ranch on Yellowstone a real working ranch?

It sure is! Scenes that take place on the ranch are filmed at the Chief Joseph Ranch in Montana.

What happened in the season 4 finale of Yellowstone?

Spoilers ahead—if you have not watched the entirety of season 4, then pause here until you do!

The season 4 finale mostly revolved around Beth. Seemingly getting her affairs in order, Beth asks Walker how she can sneak a weapon into the prison. At first it's unclear if her upcoming prison visit is to see Summer or someone else, but we soon learn that Beth heads to the prison to visit inmate Terrell Riggins. Riggins was responsible for the attempts on the lives of the Beth, John and Kayce in the season 3 finale, but only as the hired help. Beth goes to visit him with the intention of killing him. She believes the person behind the attacks to be Jamie after Riggins confirms he came to visit him. She then heads back to the ranch and kidnaps a priest along the way so she can marry Rip. She confronts Jamie over his involvement in the assassination attempt on the Duttons. Beth gives Jamie three options after he tells her he wasn't involved, but later learned it was his biological dad, Garrett. Of course, Jamie chooses the wrong option and kills Garrett in order to save himself, but things go from bad to worse when he is caught red-handed by Beth when he tries to dispose of Garrett's cold and lifeless body at the Train Station.

Meanwhile, Kayce goes on his vision quest and sees the end of something whether it's the end of him and Monica or of the Duttons is unclear. Summer gets a ridiculously long sentence for what seemingly is a minor infraction and Caroline vows to take the Dutton land and everything precious on it from Beth.

While the season 4 finale wasn't nearly as explosive (literally or figuratively) as the season 3 finale or season 4 opener, we suspect the seeds have been planted for a wild ride for season 5.

What can we expect in Yellowstone season 5?

At the end of season 4, Jamie finds himself in a compromising position when Beth catches him in the act of disposing of Garrett's body at the Train Station. Taking some damning photos of him, she effectively puts an end to his political career. How will this affect Jamie's future? And what of Christina and their son—won't she have questions about Garrett's whereabouts? Now that his political dreams are dashed, will Jamie be able to get out from under the Duttons or will he resign himself to toeing the line?

With Beth currently unemployed again after being unceremoniously fired by Caroline, she may take on the role of her father's campaign manager. She will certainly continue plotting against Caroline Warner and Market Equities. Will Warner make good on her threats against Beth and the Dutton land?

Kayce's vision quest does not return the results he had hoped for. Who was the woman that guided him in his vision? Will he continue as the livestock commissioner or will he possibly take his father's place and run for governor?

Who will replace Sheriff Haskell? Will the new sheriff be an ally to the Duttons?

Fans are wondering if Carter will be able to win back Beth's trust. We also wonder if he will ever be officially adopted by Beth and Rip? Will Beth finally relent and allow him to call her "Momma"?

With Mia and Laramie likely gone next season, will Walker be able to leave the Yellowstone ranch for good (rumor has it Bingham will be a part of the spinoff series, 6666)? Will the bunkhouse banter continue? Will they be able to end the debate on whether chili has beans or not? Will we ever be able to understand what Teeter is saying?

Hopefully, we'll get answers to all these questions and more on the next season of Yellowstone.

What other shows is Taylor Sheridan making?

Along with shows that are currently out like Mayor of Kingstown and 1883 (both on Paramount+), there's the upcoming spinoff series, 6666.

With a multi-million dollar, 5-year deal with Paramount to create content for their streaming service Paramount+, look for several new shows from Sheridan including Kansas City, Bass Reeves, Lioness, and Land Man.

Kansas City will star Sylvester Stallone in his first major role in a television series. Stallone plays a low-level but loyal mobster with hopes he'll be put in charge of his own territory one day. When the time comes he is awarded with... Kansas City. This fish-out-of-water drama finds his character trying to navigate the drug trade in a town with legalized marijuana and hipsters.

Bass Reeves follows the story of Bass Reeves, a real U.S. Deputy Marshal in the 1800s. Reeves is considered by many as one of the greatest Black lawmen that ever lived. No cast has been revealed yet. There is a separate film about Reeves unrelated to Sheridan called In Search of Bass Reeves slated for release in late 2022.

Lioness is also a fact-based drama series about two agents in a CIA female spy initiative. Currently, there are rumors that Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana are close to signing to star in the show. Frequent-Hallmark Channel actress Jill Wagner serves as executive producer and also plans to star in the show.

Land Man is based off the podcast, "Boomtown" about the oil boom in West Texas. No cast has been revealed but we hear Billy Bob Thornton is in early talks to star. Thornton has had a guest starring role on 1883, Sheridan's prequel series to Yellowstone.
