Star Wars Episode IX trailer: First look at The Rise of Skywalker

The disturbance you just felt in the Force? That was the new teaser for Episode IX — now titled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — dropping on the universe.

Director J.J. Abrams gave fans their first look into Episode IX on Friday at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago by debuting the first trailer for the Dec. 20 film.

Watch it! You’ve waited long enough.

EW will be combing through it to unlock its mysteries. Check back soon…

The movie promises to be a conclusion to the “Skywalker family saga.”

Daisy Ridley returns as the scavenger-turned-Force-warrior Rey, Adam Driver delves deeper into darkness as Kylo Ren, the prodigal son of Leia and Han; and John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran are also back as proof that outcasts and nobodies can still rise up as heroes, not fighting what they hate, but protecting what they love.

Carrie Fisher, who died in 2016, gets a curtain call in this film by way of unused earlier footage of her General Organa and hotshot X-wing pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). Her daughter, Billie Lourd, is back as Resistance Lieutenant Connix, too.

Lupita Nyong’o returns as wizened Maz Kanata and Domhnall Gleeson is still red-faced angry as General Hux, while towering Joonas Suotamo is back as everyone’s favorite walking carpet, Chewbacca.

We also got to see Billy Dee Williams return as Lando Calrissian, and although Mark Hamill wasn’t at Celebration, he is back in the new movie, fulfilling his “See you around, kid” pledge to Kylo Ren.

C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels, the only performer to have a role in every single Star Wars film, is also back, this time as a somewhat more fearsome version of the golden protocol droid.

Newcomers to the cast include Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell. Expect more on their characters as the Celebration panel concludes.

More to come…
