How to Watch Every Episode of “Friends” on Streaming

The iconic 1990s sitcom Friends is available to stream on Max and reruns often air on cable

Friends may have ended nearly 20 years ago, but its legacy lives on.

Following the news of Matthew Perry's death on Oct. 28, 2023, the show, where Perry played the quick-witted, sarcastic Chandler Bing, received an outpouring of love as fans flocked to his character's New York City apartment and paid tribute to the late actor on social media.

Though viewers of the sitcom — which premiered in 1994 and ended in 2004 — have been rewatching episodes since the show's conclusion, Perry abstained from doing so, explaining he didn’t like to see himself on the screen.

“I didn’t watch the show and haven’t watched the show because I could go drinking...opiates…drinking…cocaine. Like I could tell season by season by how I looked,” Perry, who struggled with substance abuse, said in an interview with Q with Tom Power in November 2022.

However, he added he was open to rewatching since more time had passed, given the “incredible” experience he had filming with costars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow.

After Friends wrapped, the show found a spinoff in Joey, which followed the life of LeBlanc’s Joey Tribbiani as he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. Joey ran for two seasons before it ended in 2006. The cast also reunited in 2021 for a reunion special on Max.

Where can I stream Friends?

Friends is available to stream on Max, formerly known as HBO Max. Following Perry’s death, the streaming platform added a tribute to the beginning of the first episode of every season.

The title card now reads “In Memory of Matthew Perry” with a headshot of the actor and his year of birth and death: 1969-2023.

Subscriptions to Max range from $9.99 to $19.99 per month or are available with an HBO subscription. They are also available through some TV, internet and wireless providers.

Friends previously lived on Netflix before Max obtained the rights to the series. If fans want to own the episodes rather than stream them, all seasons are available for purchase on Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple’s iTunes and Google Play.

Where can I watch Friends on cable?

Various cable channels often run episodes of the beloved show throughout the day, but on Oct. 30, 2023, TBS announced it would air the “Best of Chandler” episodes from Nov. 1 to Nov. 5, per Variety.

The marathon will start with episodes focused on Chandler and Joey’s friendship and then move into Chandler and Monica’s relationship, with encores continuing later in the week.

How can I watch the Friends reunion?

The cast of friends came together onscreen in May 2021 for a special reunion episode, which aired on HBO and streamed on Max. The nearly 2-hour special followed the six stars as they returned to the original soundstage and reminisced on their best memories from filming the show.

The special episode can also be streamed on Max.

How can I watch the Friends spinoff Joey?

After Friends concluded in 2004, the show left all the friends married and set in their lives, with the exception of Joey, who was still a struggling actor and bachelor. The spinoff, aptly titled Joey, featured LeBlanc journeying to discover what then became of his beloved character.

The show only ran for two seasons and is not available to stream, nor does it air on cable. However, those interested in a little bit more of Joey can purchase episodes of the show on Amazon Prime Video or a boxed DVD set on Amazon.
