Watch Dave Chappelle and John Mayer Perform Tribute to Charlie Murphy

On Wednesday, April 12, actor and comedian Charlie Murphy died from leukemia at the age of 57. That night, John Mayer performed in Columbus, Ohio, where Dave Chappelle made a surprise appearance, as Stereogum points out. Together, they paid tribute to Murphy. Mayer said Murphy’s line “habitual line-stepper” (from the iconic Rick James “True Hollywood Story”) is his favorite phrase ever. He then performed “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me,” which Chappelle said reminds him of Murphy. As Mayer began playing the piano, Chappelle said, “Rest in peace, Charlie Murphy. We love you. We love your comedy. We love your stories. And we love your spirit.” Watch it below.
Following his death, Chris Rock, Nas, Chance the Rapper, Anderson .Paak, “Chappelle’s Show” co-creator Neal Brennan, and more paid their respects to Murphy. The Murphy family also shared a statement about his passing. “Charlie filled our family with love and laughter and there won’t be a day that goes by that his presence will not be missed,” they said.
