Dave Chappelle’s Saturday Night Live debut came four days after Donald Trump was elected president, and his uproarious and surprisingly profound opening monologue focused heavily on that reality, while also weaving in references to Colin Kaepernick, ISIS, Bradley Cooper and Harambe.

“I know the whites. You guys aren’t as full of surprises as you used to be,” Chappelle quipped. The monologue, which ran for over 10 minutes, was highlighted by this perfect declaration: “We’ve actually elected an Internet troll as our president.”
Inhabiting the same rapport with his crowd that served as the connective tissue of Chappelle’s Show, Chappelle imitated Trump’s first meeting with Barack Obama, then ended on a hopeful note. “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck,” he said. “And I’m gonna give him a chance, and we the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”
Chris Rock later appeared alongside Trump, and A Tribe Called Quest performed on this week’s SNL.
