Am I OK? is part rom-com, part coming of age, full late-blooming lesbian epic from comedian power couple Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynnne and comedy writer Lauren Pomerantz. The new film, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2022, stars Dakota Johnson as Lucy, a 32-year-old woman coming to terms with her sexuality in Los Angeles. Following a string of unsuccessful dates with men and a lifetime of discomfort with intimacy, Lucy realizes it’s not a rut or a wave of bad luck, she’s batting for the wrong team.

Am I OK? is the latest project for Dakota Johnson following the flop of Madame Web, but our girl’s got a sense of humor. “I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world,” she said. “And I know that now.”

For now, she’s back where we want her—in the driver’s seat of an indie-coded, character-driven comedy. The story is rooted in the real life of the film’s writer (Pomerantz), who wrote on Instagram, “I’ve been waiting 3 years for this movie to come out. And true to the storyline, it’s coming out a hair later than expected. Which, if my own timeline is any indication, could be just the right time.”

The fight for representation onscreen has been a worthy one, and between the Love, Simon’s and Boy Erased’s of the world, we’ve got plenty of adolescent coming out stories. What we don’t see much of are the late in lifers, the ones who ignore, or avoid, or downright deny themselves well into their adulthood. Am I OK? Is not a story of a woman denying her identity for fear of judgment. It’s the story of a woman who is discovering, for the first time in her life, who she is and what she really wants. We may not all be battling a coming out journey in our mid-30s, but we’re all battling something, and to that we can relate.

How can I watch Am I OK? And will I be okay?

The good news is Am I OK? will stream on HBO Max on June 6. The better news? You will be okay. In fact, you may just be liberated.

The bad news? If you don’t have Max, you’re out of luck. The film’s distribution rights were acquired by HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures shortly after its release, locking into the Max platform.

That said, Am I OK? Falls neatly into Max’s collection of coming-of-age movies (for all ages), including Eighth Grade, mid90s, Shiva Baby, and 20th Century Women. And with that, a self-discovery movie marathon was born.
