Cruella de Vil is about to return to our screens in Disney’s latest live-action revival. Not just another remake like Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King, this one is set to go back further into de Vil's past and will reveal how she ended up so determined to steal Dalmatian puppies.

Cruella will be available to stream on Disney+ from May 28, 2021 – if you're not already a subscriber, you can sign up to the streaming service for £7.99 a month or £79.90 for a full year (a 15% discount).

Like other movie premieres including Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon, though, Cruella will be a Premier Access release. This means that you’ll only be able to watch it after paying a single additional fee of £19.99, about the cost of a couple of cinema tickets.

If you’ve been missing the movie theatre experience during lockdown, you’ll be glad to hear the film is also going to be out in cinemas from the same day, but you might prefer to watch it from the comfort of your own home on the streaming service.

The movie is set in the 1970s and 80s in London and it stars Emma Stone as the titular villain. The film also stars Emma Thompson as the fashion house boss who leads Cruella down a dark path and will feature de Vil’s henchmen Horace and Jasper, played by Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry, respectively. The rest of the cast includes Mark Strong, Emily Beecham, Jamie Demetriou and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

By delving deep into the villain’s backstory, Disney is taking the same approach it did with Maleficent, and it sounds like it pays off. We’ve seen some of the first reactions to Cruella this week and critics are praising it as a fun and stylish movie that provides some much-needed escapism.

Digital Spy's Movies editor Ian Sandwell said, "Anyone concerned about the need for an origin story for Cruella de Vil will find things to be frustrated about in #Cruella, but there's no denying it has some serious style, incredible costumes and some Very Good Dogs."

It’s worth signing up for Disney+ not only for the latest releases like Cruella, but subscribers can also enjoy access to a huge catalogue of films including classics like 101 Dalmatians itself and Lady and the Tramp, new Pixar films including Soul and Onward, all the MCU movies and the Star Wars saga (and the newest shows in the Marvel and Star Wars universes). You can also catch up on all your favourite TV shows, like New Girl, Bones, Lost and Grey’s Anatomy.

Cruella is out in cinemas and on Disney+ with Premier Access on May 28.
