Despite being surrounded by revered Hollywood giants in the industry, Charles Melton has been the talk of this season’s Supporting Actor race. His heart shattering turn as Joe Yoo in Todd Hayne’s scandalous melodrama “May December” has birthed a frenzy of passionate acclaim.

The 33-year-old TV star (“Riverdale”) has raked in a whopping 28 nominations from critics groups. Of these, Melton has won seven, including the New York Film Critics Circle. He also won at Gotham Awards in a combined category over, among others, Oscar frontrunners Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”).

He faces off against Gosling (2nd in our combined odds) this Sunday at the Golden Globes. Gosling benefits from his star power and being part of the most nominated film, “Barbie.” The category leader according to our odds, Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), has equal star power. He arguably has the most of any actor this century, due to his influential role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man.

Downey contends for a Best Picture juggernaut in “Oppenheimer,” which leads our odds in the Drama Picture category. Gosling’s “Barbie” leads our odds in Comedy Picture. Melton’s “May December” is nominated in major categories though, such as Comedy Picture, Actress (Natalie Portman) and Supporting Actress (Julianne Moore). So, while not to the extent of Gosling and Downey, there is passion among Globe voters for Melton’s movie.

Melton is fortunate in that his performance will be the main channel to show support for “May December.”  Breakout performances also have a history of being rewarded in this category. Examples include Peter Firth (“Equus”), Edward Norton (“Primal Fear”), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of The Dog”). The love for “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” has so many different places to be channeled.

The new Golden Globes love to “spread the wealth”. There wasn’t the “La La Land” sweep for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” her that ended up occurring at the Academy Awards later. Indeed, a very similar version of this year’s Supporting Actoro category played out last year in Supporting Actress.

Despite “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” performing well on the night and winning five of the major categories between them, the Supporting Actress category went a different way. Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) triumphed over, among others, Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”). Condon would go on to win the BAFTA along with a “Banshees” sweep. Lee Curtis won at SAG and then the Oscars.
