Get ready to go gaga for another group of earnest teenagers hoping to change the world, or at least win a fake election at a famous youth retreat.

The contender to watch this week: “Girls State”

More from GoldDerby

In 2021, “Boys State” picked up recognitions from the National Board of Review, Directors Guild of America, Emmys, and several critics groups, so of course we’re getting a sequel. This time, directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss move from Texas to Missouri to profile teenagers attending the eponymous mock-government program. The ambitious, excitable girls are just as fascinating as their male counterparts, and you can see them in action on Apple TV+.

Other contenders:

  • The Zone of Interest“: If you still haven’t caught Jonathan Glazer‘s mesmerizing Holocaust drama, which won two Oscars and continues to spark controversy, it’s newly streaming on Max.

  • “How to Have Sex”: Molly Manning Walker‘s directorial debut is ostensibly a party movie: Three 16-year-old British friends travel to Greece for a boozy getaway. One of them (Mia McKenna-Bruce, seen in 2022’s “Persuasion”) is hoping to lose her virginity on the trip, and that’s where things take a darker turn. “How to Have Sex” won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes last year and was recently nominated for three BAFTAs. It’s available on Mubi and VOD platforms.

  • “Skin Deep”: A body-swap movie in a minor key, Kazakhstani director Alex Shaad‘s sci-fi-lite drama takes place at a remote retreat where people can experience others’ perspectives. The film revolves around a devoted couple (Mala Edme and Jonas Dassler) engaging in the experiment with confounding results. “Skin Deep” won the Queer Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, and it’s now available on VOD.

  • “The American Society of Magical Negroes”: Kobi Libii went for a big swing with his directorial debut. The fantastical satire about a cabal of Black people who ease white suffering as a means of self-protection has polarized critics since its theatrical release last month. Decide what you think of it on VOD.

  • “Música”: After premiering at South by Southwest, this charming romantic comedy about a New Jersey man (Rudy Mancuso, who also directed and co-wrote the movie) with synesthesia has hit Prime Video. It co-stars Camilla Mendes, J.B. Smoove, and “Stranger Things” breakout Francesca Reale.
