American Idol kicks off its 19th season tonight, Sunday, February 14, at 8 p.m. EST. We know—we can’t believe it’s season 19 either. This 2021 American Idol premiere is a little different than previous years.
The much-beloved audition process is back to being in-person, but it’ll be socially distanced. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan have returned as judges and Ryan Seacrest is back as the host. Luckily for fans, unlike last year’s fully remote season, the judges, host and contestants will be back in the studio, airing live. Last season, Just Sam wowed the judges and won the competition.

This year, there’s a high-profile contestant. Kellyanne Conway’s 16-year-old daughter, Claudia, is auditioning for Idol. Claudia has been documenting her mother’s alleged abusive behavior on TikTok for the past few months. Kellyanne was Senior Counselor during President Donald Trump’s administration. Many people on social media have become concerned for Claudia’s situation and she addresses her family background and her wish to move forward in a clip for the show.
“The internet can be a very, very dark place,” Conway says at the end of her video. “But when life is all going downhill, I have my music. Now, I want to get out of the controversy, get out of the drama, and let people know that I am a singer and this is what I want to do.”
