“Past Lives Is Already the Best Movie of the Year,” Rolling Stone announced after seeing playwright Celine Song’s debut feature film last year. Now all these months later, the movie, which stars Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, has garnered buzz from movie fans and critics alike — earning nods for some of the biggest prizes at the upcoming Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Rolling Stone‘s top movie of 2023, Past Lives recently landed on streaming services, just in time to watch ahead of the Oscars.

“Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea,” reads A24’s film synopsis of Past Lives. “Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one fateful week as they confront notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life, in this heartrending modern romance.”
Written and directed by Song, Past Lives stars Lee as Nora, while Yoo plays her childhood friend Hae Sung. Magaro, meantime, plays Nora’s writer husband. The film is rated R and has a runtime of approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes.
