Washington State DC walks away when asked if he plans to be at school in 2018
Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch clearly didn’t want to tell reporters whether or not he was planning on being in Pullman in 2018.
When asked that question after Tuesday’s practice in preparation for the Holiday Bowl, Grinch said thanks and walked away. Watch:
Why is this such a hard question to answer? Well, according to Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, it’s widely-expected that Grinch will at Ohio State next season. The NCAA’s new rule allowing a 10th assistant kicks in next season and Grinch would be the added assistant to the Buckeyes’ staff.
Grinch is an Ohio native and grew up in the Columbus metro area. He’s been Washington State’s defensive coordinator for the past three seasons and with Greg Schiano on staff at Ohio State (after his Tennessee job fell through), it’s unclear just what Grinch’s role could be.
Before he was asked if he expected to be at Wazzu next season, Grinch was asked about reports that mentioned his presence in Columbus earlier in the month. Grinch gave a long non-answer to that question, which led to the question about his future with the Cougars.
And walking away when the question was posed isn’t going to downplay any of the Ohio State speculation. Coaches who are planning on staying in their current jobs are usually keen on saying so.
