Washington Pavilion to host traveling photo collection 'Women: A Century of Change'

The Washington Pavilion has announced the opening of “WOMEN: A Century of Change,” a traveling photography exhibition on display in Sioux Falls until June 30 in its Visual Arts Center, according to a news release from the arts, science and culture hub.

The photography exhibition, divided into six themes, was inspired by and derived from the photo archives of National Geographic with the intent to showcase a global chronicle of the lives of women, according to the release.

The exhibition, a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution’s 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote, symbolizes and emphasizes the journey of women’s rights then, now and the road ahead. It celebrates trailblazers who have redefined womanhood, read the release.

“We are so excited to host this significant exhibition and provide families, students, educators, women’s groups and beyond an opportunity to experience these celebrated photographs,” said Jana Anderson, Lead Curator for the Washington Pavilion. “Come and witness the power and impact radiating from this beautiful collection of National Geographic imagery.”

The pavilion is also set to host a three-part speaker series along with the exhibition, for which tickets are available on their website as well as at their Box Office on 301 South Main Avenue. The speaker series will be focused on highlighting local women of change, according to the release.

The moderated panel discussion called “Uniting Generations of South Dakota Women” is set for Feb. 27, the session “Inspiring South Dakota Change Makers” to highlight local artists will occur on April 10, and a lecture on “The Future is Female” is set for June 20.

The exhibition’s themes, including Joy, Beauty, Love, Wisdom, Strength and Hope, will each have collections of art thoughtfully curated to invoke that particular emotion. The exhibition will showcase over 100 images of women from over 30 countries across the globe, “offering a glimpse into the lives of women worldwide through the past century,” according to the press release.

“From Amy Toensing’s photo of the joy felt between two women participating in India’s traditional Holi festival to Lynn Johnson’s image conveying the strength of women traversing the desert plains of Kenya to bring water to their families, the pictures invite reflection and recognition of the fact that, despite differences and distance, we all experience similar emotions,” read the press release.

The exhibition features a section called “Through the Lens” at different points. It will be a collection of behind-the-scenes anecdotes narrated by the photographers themselves on experiences of capturing their most compelling shots, read the press release.

An additional section included in the exhibition called the “Portraits of Power” will showcase a cluster of images by women who have shattered the glass ceiling such as media executive Oprah Winfrey, gun violence prevention activist Emma González, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 2019 Women’s World Cup Champion Alex Morgan, #MeToo movement founder Tarana Burke and philanthropist Melinda Gates.

The audience will also have the opportunity to purchase a book that displays the 450 images showcased as part of the exhibition called “Women: The National Geographic Image Collection.”
