Draymond Green has been suspended without pay for five games. According to ESPN, the Warriors star was punished for his role in the on-court brawl against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Missing the next five games will run the four-time NBA Champion $769,704 in forfeited salary.

The Tuesday night (Nov. 14) exhibition saw Green “forcibly grabbing” Rudy Gobert “in an unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner” during the in-season tournament exhibition, NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars detailed.

Dumars spoke about the decision to punish Green in a statement. “The length of the suspension is based in part on Green’s history of unsportsmanlike acts,” the former NBA player and Draymond’s mentor explained.

On Tuesday night, a scuffle between Jaden McDaniels and Klay Thompson broke out during the Warriors and Timberwolves game. Minnesota’s center appeared to be breaking up the initial altercation, and in the process, Gobert approached Thompson with his arms near his neck. Draymond took note and lunged at Gobert to protect his teammate, resulting in Green placing the Minnesota player in an intense chokehold. Thompson, McDaniels, and Green were all ejected from the contest.

ESPN also reports that Thompson, McDaniels, and Gobert were all fined $25,000 for their respective roles in the mayhem.

Gobert reacted to his punishment for partaking in the on-court battle. The outlet reports that the French big man wasn’t too pleased with being fined for his role as “peacemaker.”

“Every situation is different, but to me, that was more than just a reaction. That was a personal attack,” Gobert expressed. “Me being fined when I was being a peacemaker, and I chose to keep my hands up while I was being assaulted, it’s shameful. Shameful. And I’m going to appeal that fine.”

Golden State’s head coach, Steve Kerr, also voiced his displeasure with the situation before the suspension and fines. Sports Illustrated reports that Kerr expressed he was confused that his small forward was ejected from Tuesday’s game when he was defending himself.

“There’s no way Klay Thompson should have been thrown out of the game,” he passionately explained. “He’s running up the floor, and the guy grabs his jersey, and he’s pulling on him, so Klay pulls back. No way Klay should have been ejected. That was ridiculous.”

Draymond Green will return to the court on Tuesday (Nov. 28) against the Sacramento Kings in Sactown.
