'Warcraft' Director Duncan Jones on the Challenges of Making a Video-Game Movie and Looking to Pixar for Inspiration

Could video-game movies be the next big thing, like comic-book movies? With every movie studio and TV network milking this superhero thing, it may be easy to miss that five video game movies are coming out this year, including Warcraft on Friday.

Film adaptations of video games aren’t anything new, and they’ve been mostly bad. This is something that Warcraft director Duncan Jones knows all too well. So he went into making this movie with a game plan.

“Working closely with the guys who made the game is really important,” Jones told Yahoo Movies. “You’ve really got to try as hard as you can to find a way to bring out and interpret what it was the fans of the game liked in the first place because that’s gonna to set you straight.”

As far as finding a balance between making a movie that can appeal to the hardcore fans of the game as well as a more broad audience, Jones turned to a familiar place for inspiration.

“I kind of took a little bit of a lead from Pixar, who do this all the time. They make movies that work for kids and work for the parents on a whole different level,” Jones said.

Warcraft opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
