Want free tickets to The Flaming Lips' OKC summer shows? Here's when and how to get them

More details have been revealed about The Flaming Lips' grand plans to perform two free hometown summer concerts in Oklahoma City.

The OKC psychedelic art-rockers announced earlier this month that they will play a two-show "Summer Freak Out" Aug. 30-31 at OKC's Zoo Amphitheatre, the hometown venue where they played one of the "legendary" concerts of their career.

General admission to the all-ages shows will be free with RSVP.

Starting at 10 a.m. May 20, preferred seating tickets will be available to purchase, and the online portal will open so that fans can reserve free general admission lawn tickets. To buy preferred seating tickets or RSVP for free tickets, go to www.okczooamp.com.

An online reservation for free tickets will be required, but will not guarantee entry, as the event is first come, first served. Lips fans should plan to arrive early for the shows at the 90-year-old outdoor stage, which is undergoing infrastructure updates, but overnight camping outside the venue ahead of the concerts will be prohibited.

What can people expect from The Flaming Lips' OKC 'Summer Freak Out' shows?

The "Fearless Freaks" previously recorded their first live concert film, "UFOs at the Zoo: The Legendary Concert in Oklahoma City," at the OKC Zoo's venerable venue in September 2006. When they announced the October 2012 encore, dubbed “Freak Night," frontman Wayne Coyne told The Oklahoman that the original Zoo Amp concert "might still stand as our greatest show that we've ever done."

Formed in OKC in 1983, the Lips will celebrate their 40th anniversary as a three-time Grammy-winning band as well as the enduring influence of two of the group's seminal albums at the OKC Labor Day weekend shows.

At the Aug. 30 concert, the alt-rockers will perform in its entirety their trailblazing 2002 album "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," which includes the Grammy-nominated opener "Fight Test," the Grammy-winning instrumental "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" and the emotional anthem "Do You Realize??," which in 2009 was named Oklahoma's official state rock song.

For their Aug. 31 show at the newly upgraded OKC venue, the experimental rockers will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their masterwork "The Soft Bulletin" by playing it track by track. Ranked No. 3 on Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of the 1990s, the 1999 album features beloved songs like "Race for the Prize," "Waitin' for a Superman" and "The Spark That Bled."

The OKC "Summer Freak Out" showcase is the only "The Soft Bulletin" 25th anniversary concert the band is planning at this time.

For both shows of their home stand, the Lips are expected to play for more than two hours, not counting the 20-minute intermission planned for each night. There will be no opening acts.

When can ticketholders line up for The Flaming Lips' summer OKC concerts?

The start times for the shows and the times when the doors will open for the concerts have not yet been announced.

General admission tickets to The Flaming Lips' August OKC shows will be free with RSVP, subject to the venue's capacity, which is about 10,000 people. No fees will be charged for the free tickets, according to a news release.

Once the online reservations for free tickets reach capacity, fans can register for the waitlist for general admission tickets.

Fans who reserve free tickets will be contacted via email in the days leading up to the show to confirm their reservation. At least a day in advance of the concert, they will receive a QR code that will be their ticket.

Ahead of the concerts, people who make ticket reservations but aren't able to attend one of the shows will be able to release their tickets back to the venue so they can be sent to someone on the waitlist.

Selling of free tickets will be strictly prohibited. The QR code for any ticket that is sold will be disabled.

Fans will be allowed to line up three hours before the posted door times for the concerts. No overnight camping outside the venue will be allowed leading up to the shows.

The paid preferred ticket option will include a reserved seat near the front of the stage, a separate entry line and more. Preferred tickets will be sold for the Aug. 30 and Aug. 31 shows, as well as in two-night bundles.

Upon ticket RSVP or purchase, fans should receive a confirmation email that will be issued automatically. They are advised to check their spam folder if they don't see it in their inbox.

Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes, but to dress responsibly for a family-friendly event where children are expected to be in attendance.

Fans also are advised to be prepared for Oklahoma summer weather at the outdoor shows.
