WandaVision director Matt Shakman is in talks to direct an upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four.
As Variety points out, Jon Watts — who directed Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home — was originally confirmed to direct the long-anticipated Marvel project, but he quit in April. Likely thanks to Shakman’s Emmy-winning success with Disney+’s WandaVision, he was rumored to be the next pick.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased the new Fantastic Four at San Diego Comic-Con back in July, and it’s currently expected to premiere on November 8th, 2024. Feige said that it’ll kick off Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although it’s still up in the air who will portray the Fantastic Four: Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing. Fans are crossing their fingers that John Krasinski will reprise the role of Mr. Fantastic after appearing as an alternate version of the character in this year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Shakman will also be directing another blockbuster franchise with the upcoming fourth Star Trek film, which is expected to reunite Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and John Cho. We probably won’t be seeing that, though, until December 2023.
Aside from his work on WandaVision, Shakman’s resume also incudes gigs directing episodes of Game of Thrones, The Boys, Succession, Fargo, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
