Well, that was fast. In Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live — only the limited series’ second — star-crossed lovers Rick and Michonne were reunited. But of course their new beginning wasn’t entirely a happy ending. Read on…

SIX YEARS AFTER THE BRIDGE | Early on in “Gone,” we learned that the couple that Michonne helped back in Season 10 of the mothership — Aiden and Bailey, not that you’d need to know their names for long — was part of a group whose leader had a “Leave any man behind” policy. Uninterested in being part of such a group, Michonne accepted a horse as a thank-you for her assistance and was on her way. She didn’t get far, though. In no time, she was staring down a massive walker migration. She tried to disburse the dead by launching a rocket into the herd, only to have a “gasman” — a walker with fuel cans strapped to him — explode and knock her off her hard-earned horse.

Luckily, Aiden and Bailey had come after Michonne along with Nat, who’d had the good sense to take an immediate shine to the newcomer. Once Michonne had found Rick, she promised, they’d escort the lot of them to Alexandria. If only. Soon enough, the CRM dropped chlorine gas bombs on the travelers, sending parents-to-be Aiden and Bailey to the grave and putting Michonne and Nat on a long road to recovery. Once the twosome was well enough, they made their way to Bridgers Terminal, where piles and piles of the dead burned to a crisp led Michonne to accept that Rick was gone. Only then did she receive encouragement from Nat, who’d heretofore suggested on a loop that she give up. She could go home to her kids, he said, and still continue to keep a little faith.

NOW | As Michonne and Nat got thisclose to within range to walkie-talkie her kids, they spotted a CRM chopper approaching. Not about to be gassed a second time, Nat took aim and managed to down the helicopter. Then, an enraged Michonne set about slitting the survivors’ throats until surprise! As in the premiere (recapped here), she discovered that one of them was Rick! “I found you!” she exclaimed. Between kisses, Rick quickly explained that he wasn’t with the CRM and, for her own good, she’d need to lie to the soldiers that she was someone else (someone who definitely wasn’t an “A,” much less his lost love).

Before Michonne could spin a yarn, Nat was fatally shot by a CRM soldier. “Is it still [Rick]?” he asked. “Can you tell?” Michonne was sure that she could and he was. But that belief would soon be tested mightily after, at his instruction, she convinced the CRM that she was a loner named Dana. During a clandestine meeting with Rick, she ascertained that he knew that the CRM was going around killing people. Could they stop them? “No,” Rick said. “Could we try?” she asked. “We’d never get back.” Hmm… that didn’t sound like the selfless Rick that she knew and loved.

Finally, Rick made his way back to his apartment, only to find waiting for him… Jadis. The CRM baddie was quick to inform him that she was aware of Michonne’s presence — and that she’d keep it between them. But, the erstwhile Anne hastened to add, “this doesn’t fall under our longstanding deal.” If the couple tried to escape, Rick knew what Jadis would do to Alexandria. “My hands are already covered in blood,” she noted. “They can’t get any bloodier.” She did have one question for Rick, though, and apologized in advance for its phrasing: “What the f–k are you doing?”

So, what did you think of the “Richonne” reunion? And what, exactly, do you think are the terms of Rick and Jadis’ longstanding agreement? Hit the comments.
