More than a year after being announced, the first of four Whataburger locations for the Athens area has opened.

The 3201 Atlanta Hwy. restaurant opened for lunch on Wednesday for drive-through service only. A team member on site told the Banner-Herald that the restaurant would remain closed for indoor dining for the next six weeks while the staff concentrated on getting the drive-through streamlined.

Cars were lined up at 11:30 a.m. for lunch service as employees took orders from individual vehicles in a similar fashion to Chick-Fil-A. Plastic menus were handed out with a slimmed-down selection of Whataburger items like the fast food chain's signature single, double and triple burgers, chicken sandwiches and milkshakes. Customers paid at their car and were directed into two drive-through lanes to pick up their food at a service window.

The Atlanta Highway location broke ground on Mar. 15. Athens locations at 3321 Lexington Rd. and in Kroger Marketplace at 700 US-29 have yet to open, as has a location at 100 Pottery Rd. in Commerce.

Though online ordering at the Atlanta Highway Whataburger is currently unavailable, the drive-through is open 24 hours.
