American Idol is returning for season 23, and the time to vote for the show's next winner will come around again soon.

Since its inception over 20 years ago, the ABC singing competition show has discovered a range of talent, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson.

In recent seasons, host Ryan Seacrest and judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have witnessed contestants journey through auditions to the big finale, but since Perry has stepped down, when the show returns, a new celebrity will be joining the judges panel.

Before the grand title can be handed out, American Idol contestants must go through several rounds of auditions, performances, and themed nights. Select hopefuls will be awarded the coveted Platinum Tickets, which will go to three talented contestants who have earned the privilege of skipping the first round of Hollywood Week.

By the time the season concludes, only three contestants will remain onstage — a result of viewers tuning in each week and voting for their favorite singers.

After all the voting is tallied, only one winner will be crowned the next American Idol, which means they'll win a cash prize and a record deal.

So as you prepare to tune into the next season, here's everything to know about how to vote on American Idol, including when the process starts and the different ways to participate.

Since each season of American Idol has several different rounds, airing dates and times may differ depending on the contestants' progress. You can check the show's website and app to find out when voting opens and closes each week.

Voting takes place during each coast-to-coast live show and closes during the last commercial break.

There are three ways to vote on American Idol: online, by app and by text.

Every week, you can submit up to 10 votes for each contestant per voting method. So, you could vote for your favorite contestant 10 times online, 10 times on the app and 10 times via text, for a total of 30 votes.

If you change your mind, you can reallocate your votes until the vote closes online and on the app —just click “save” each time you make an edit.

If you're at least 16 years old and located in the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can vote online on the ABC website. You will need an ABC account, which you can sign up for with your email address.

If you’re a minimum of 16 years old and live within the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can cast your votes on the American Idol app, available on iOS and Android.

Once you download the app on your device, you'll need to sign into your ABC account. If you don't have one, you can create it with an email address.

To vote via text message, text the number of the contestant you’re voting for to 21523. Voting via text is open to all wireless carriers, and message and data rates may apply. The number for each contestant will be announced throughout the season.
