The von Trapps Are Now an Indie-Rock Band: Hear the ‘Sound of Music’ Family’s Great-Grandkids

When you think of the von Trapp family, the first image that comes to mind is probably that of the cheerful group of children harmonizing to “Do-Re-Mi,” as depicted in the 1965 film The Sound of Music.

Fast-forward to 2015, however, and the great-grandchildren of Captain and Maria von Trapp are forging their own path as a group of indie-rockers.

The von Trapps (of course they kept the legendary name), as they’re called, is a group made up of Amanda, Melanie, August and Sofi von Trapp, and, in an interview with The Washington Post, the group talked about embracing their family’s history while still showcasing their individuality.

The group of twentysomethings are the children of Stefan Von Trapp, and their grandfather Werner von Trapp was a part of the original singing family (loosely depicted as “Kurt” in the film), but they say that didn’t help their parents very much when it came to dealing with a group of singing kids.

“Our parents had no clue what it was to go on tour or have kids in the music industry,” August told The Post.

That didn’t stop them from forming the group and performing together throughout their childhood, however. The von Trapps released their first EP of original music, Dancing in Gold, earlier this year and are currently on tour.

The group even shared that they play songs like “Edelweiss” during their live shows to honor their grandparents’ legacy.
