Volusia Speedway: World of Outlaws returns; brings DIRTcar along for tripleheader

BARBERVILLE — It might officially be the opening weekend of Daytona Bike Week, but the four-wheel racing fun hasn't gone away with the turning of the calendar from February to March.

Volusia Speedway Park, just two weeks removed from its annual week-plus of February racing, revs up again Sunday when the Sprint Cars from the World of Outlaws begin a two-day show at the half-mile, banked dirt track in Barberville.

The World of Outlaws will bring a piece of February back to town with them. Sunday's schedule includes the DIRTcar Nationals Big Gator finale, which was rained out in February. It carries a first-place prize of $16,000.

Grandstands open at 5 each afternoon, with racing beginning at 6. Ticket prices range from $35 to $45.

Big Game Racing's David Gravel, with two wins in two starts this year (both at Barberville last month), returns and attempts to run the table again. Defending Sprint Car champ Brad Sweet and 10-time champ Donny Schatz will be among those trying to prevent that, as will Sweet's team owner and former NASCAR Cup Series star Kasey Kahne.

Monday's racing will include a nod to Bike Week, with NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace riding into Barberville aboard one of his Southern Country Customs Harley Davidsons. He'll be joined by son Steve and brother Kenny, and they will serve as Grand Marshals for that night's event.
