Volunteers Rush to Save Dozens of Stranded Pilot Whales in New Zealand

Volunteers rushed to save dozens of whales stranded at Farewell Spit, New Zealand, on February 22.

Environmental organisation Project Jonah reported 49 pilot whales were stranded, while nine had perished.

This video shows volunteers assisting the whales as the tide rises and begins to submerge the stranded marine mammals. The animals were “on the beach all day” before the tide rose again, according to a voice heard in this video from Project Jonah. Credit: Project Jonah via Storyful
