'The Voice': The Top 20 blow the coaches away despite malfunction, flubbed lyrics

"The Voice" is live!

The Top 20 contestants hit the stage Monday during the first night of Live Playoffs, all vying for a chance to earn a coveted spot in the Top 13 on the NBC competition.

"We’re here, we’re live. This is crazy," said returning coach Gwen Stefani, fresh off a People's Choice Award win Sunday night for Fashion Icon.

And for the first time this season, viewers have a say on who advances with their votes. The top 8 voted singers will automatically advance and each coach will be able to save one team member. The last spot will be "determined by a wildcard instant save," host Carson Daly revealed.

Here's what happened:

Team Blake

Shelton’s only country singer, Gracee Shriver, wowed the coaches with a rendition of Lady Antebellum’s "American Honey."

But, it was her professionalism following a behind-the-scenes malfunction that really impressed everyone.

"I need America to know you that had a guitar in your hand and something went wrong with the guitar. You just impromptu had to change your whole performance. That was remarkable! A lot of people would have been thrown off by that," said Kelly Clarkson, Shriver's coach before Shelton stole her last week.

Shelton added, "The guitar thing would have freaked me out that nobody knows at home. … I could not be more proud for you."

Shelton's team performances also included Ricky Duran's rendition of John Mellencamp's "Small Town"; Cali Wilson's slowed-down version of Britney Spears' "Toxic"; Ricky Braddy's soulful take on Steve Winwood's "Roll With It"; and Kat Hammock's indie inspired "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys.

Hammock received the first standing ovation of the night from all four coaches. "You are so lucky, I’m so jealous," Stefani told her boyfriend Shelton about Hammock.

Team Kelly

Clarkson believes "this is my best season of singers," and that's saying a lot since she's won "The Voice" twice before. She added, "We are the front-runner this season."

Shane Q momentarily jumbled the lyrics while singing Frankie Valli’s "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," but he recovered so smoothly that the coaches appeared to forget his mishap entirely.

"You are going to be around this show for a while. You are so talented," Shelton said. Clarkson added that Shane is "hashtag blessed" and his performance sounded better than the original.

Clarkson's other team performances included Damali's version of Lauren Daigle’s "You Say"; Max Boyle's take on Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová's "Falling Slowly"; Jake Hoot's rendition of Reba McEntire's "You Lie"; and Hello Sunday's bold duet of Adele's "Hello."

Stefani said she was "mesmerized" by Hello Sunday's musical prowess. "I can’t believe you guys are 14," she said, hilariously comparing the youngest duo ever on the show to her 13-year-old son "Kingston … singing Green Day in the shower."

Clarkson added that she would've "peed my pants" at their age.

Team Gwen

Rose Short got the coaches on their feet dancing with her sexy rendition of Janet Jackson’s "What Have You Done for Me Lately."

Clarkson quite literally couldn’t stop.

"I can't even sit down and you’re not even on my team," said Clarkson. "That was so sexy. … It was so good. It was one hell of a performance."

Short's coach agreed. "I’m so proud of you," Stefani said. "I am so proud to know you, actually. I can’t believe you are on my team."

Stefani's team performances also included Kyndal Inskeep's rendition of Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber’s "10,000 Hours"; Myracle Holloway's take on Brenda Russell's "Get Here"; Jake HaldenVang's rocker version of Adele’s "Turning Tables"; and Joana Martinez's powerful "You Can’t Stop the Girl" by Bebe Rexha.

Martinez, who was on Shelton's team before Stefani stole her, made him second-guess his decision.

"I’m happy that you're making me regret ever letting you go. I’ve done some stupid things in my life and that may have been the stupidest," said Shelton.

Stefani replied, "Blake, it’s our little girl. That’s our little girl."

Team John

Reigning champ and V-EGOT winner John Legend is "going for a win. I want to win two in a row." And he thinks he has the singers to do it: "My team is so strong going into the playoffs."

And Clarkson thinks Will Breman did just that after his jazz rendition of Taylor Swift’s "Style," which included his scat singing. "You just won 'The Voice,'" she said.

Legend's team performances also included Khalea Lynee's soulful rendition of Faith Evans’ "Love Like This"; Alex Guthrie's take on Alicia Keys’ "If I Ain’t Got You"; Marybeth Byrd's version of Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do"; and Katie Kadan's performance of Lady Gaga's "Always Remember Us This Way."

Legend said a star was born, no pun intended.

"You have so much soul in your voice. … You just ooze so much emotion and power," Legend said to Kadan. "The tender moments were so wonderful."

The power to decide who advances to the Top 13 is up to viewers' vote. Results will be revealed during Tuesday's elimination show on NBC at 8 EST/PST.
