8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘The Voice’!” In episode 8, the battles continued. On Team Reba Zeya Raye defeated and eliminated William Alexander. On Team Chance Maddi Jane defeated Nadège, but Chance used his playoff pass, sending Nadège directly into the next round. On Team Dan + Shay Frank Garcia defeated Justin & Jeremy Garcia, but Reba used her steal to bring the brothers over to her team. Team Legend had the night off. Let’s continue the battles!

8:02 p.m. – The night began with Team Reba’s Donny Van Slee against Josh Sanders, paired because they’re country vocalists with a growl that Reba thinks are “different enough” to go well together. She gave them “When It Rains It Pours” to perform. After one pass through the song, Reba was concerned that the ending was “anti-climactic” and so she guided them through livening it up for more of an impact. She also wanted Donny to practice his eye contact so that he can connect with the audience directly.

8:07 p.m. – After their battle, Chance was surprised by Josh’s “crazy runs” after thinking that Donny would run away with it. Dan thought they had good energy and that they both “shine better individually,” with Josh having “a little more control.” Shay likes the “brokenness” in Donny’s voice. John called it “fantastic,” highlighting that it looked like Donny was enjoying the performance and that was “beautiful and cool.” But he also thought that Josh “executes a little bit better.” Reba told the guys that it felt like they all “bonded” in the rehearsal so it was a hard decision for her to make. Noting that it’s only because the show is called “The Voice,” Reba picked Josh as her winner since he “stepped up to the plate” vocally.

8:16 p.m. – Next up was Ronnie Wilson and Gene Taylor to represent Team Legend with their version of “When I Was Your Man.” John told Ronnie that he appreciates the style they put on the song and Gene that he’s more worried about him matching the emotion of the song.

8:25 p.m. – Following their performance, Reba complimented Gene’s “warm and wonderful tones” and Ronnie’s ability to hit the high notes. Chance could tell through his performance that Gene grew up as a theater kid and urged John to pick Gene so that Chance will have an opportunity to steal him in the next round. Dan said that Gene has a “perfect vibrato,” but Ronnie brought it “neck and neck” with the high notes he hit. Shay would give the edge to Gene, but Dan preferred Ronnie instead. John’s decision came down to Ronnie’s “style and approach to music” and Gene’s “richness, range and precision.” Ultimately, he gave Chance his wish and offered the win to Gene.

8:37 p.m. – At this point in the round, John still had his steal available while Dan + Shay were in possession of their own steal as well as their playoff pass. Madison Curbelo and Kyle Schuesler had their opportunity to earn that pass from Dan + Shay with their duet to the bilingual song “Lucky/Suerte.” The coaches were surprised by how much Kyle stepped up to sing out of his comfort zone in Spanish on the song, but wanted to make sure he was hitting his falsetto notes “with confidence.”

8:48 p.m. – Their performance was “beautiful” according to John. He told Madison it was “brilliant” and Kyle was believable in Spanish for his first time. Overall, he said their performance was “in his heart” and would “very slightly” give Madison the edge. Reba also thought they did a “great job,” but she would go with Kyle if it was her decision. Chance said that he sees them both as potential winners of the show and neither of them should leave the competition. He also told Dan + Shay that this is the moment they should use their playoff pass in order to block John from stealing one of them. Dan called it “the most cohesive performance so far” and agreed that they both deserve to win. Shay taunted John a bit, making it clearer that this was going to be their playoff pass performance. Their winner that advanced to the knockouts was Kyle. Sure enough, they waited for John to hit his steal button before they answered with their playoff pass to keep Madison on their team and send her straight to the lives.

9:01 p.m. – Chance’s first pairing of the night was his two singer songwriters, Bri Fletcher and Serenity Arce on “Someone You Loved.” He was impressed with Bri in rehearsal because she showed more control than he remembered from her blind audition. He worked with them both to break up some of their harmonies because he thought originally they came through a bit “cloudy.”

9:11 p.m. – Shay told Serenity that she has an “unbelievable tone” and she performed is “so emotional and raw.” He gave Bri the note that she felt “outside of the song” because she was “trying to be perfect.” Dan agreed, but thought that Bri did a lot of work since the blinds and it showed. John called it “very moving” and appreciated that they “embraced the spirit” of the song. Reba thought Serenity “channeled” emotion into a “great performance” and sees Bri’s range as “powerful.” Chance added that Serenity has a “very specific tone” that is great and “polished” while Bri is “such a strong singer” because of her “control” and ability to “belt on pitch.” In this moment, Chance’s winner was Serenity.

9:18 p.m. – Chance also had the pairing of Dani Stacy and Corey Curtis on “Best Part” where he picked Dani as the winner because she impressed him with the transition into contemporary R&B and her control over the song.

9:24 p.m. – Team Dan + Shay returned to the stage with its “country boys” Ducote Talmage and Ryan Coleman on “Rock and a Hard Place.” In rehearsal, Dan told them that they performed better without playing the guitar and so he urged them to consider that take on the song. He also wanted them to “focus on breathing.”

9:34 p.m. – John loved Ducote’s “scratchy mid-range” of his voice even if he wanted to “dial back” the growl in certain moments. Reba agreed that Ducote has a great tone and thinks that the difference in their dialect actually enhanced the song. Chance said that he could tell Ryan “really wanted it” and in the harmonies he was “helping Ducote.” Dan sensed Ducote’s nerves, but called him a “star on stage.” He said that Ryan is a “technically strong singer” though. Their decision came down to who they thought “brought the most passion” and so their winner was Ducote.

9:45 p.m. – John had the final pairing of the night with Olivia Rubini and Jackie Romeo on “Edge of Seventeen.” There was a learning curve for Jackie because she had never heard the song before, but she was able to connect to the themes of loss and grief through personal experience. John noted Jackie’s “gospel” tones in her voice and thought that the “gentle finesse” of Olivia’s voice worked well, too. He only had to work through a few notes with them because he thought their first pass was really good.

9:54 p.m. – Reba told Jackie that her voice and stage presence really worked, but she had to pass on picking a winner between the two. Chance appreciated that they gave each other space, calling Jackie’s voice “fuller” and so he gave her the edge. Dan could tell that they worked in rehearsal and they gave “one of the most together” performances. John loved their “interaction with each other,” highlighting Olivia’s “stylized approach” and Jackie’s “crispness” in her voice. His personal winner was Jackie because of her “powerful voice” that “cuts to the core.” Dan + Shay nearly let Olivia walk off the stage before they chimed in with their steal to bring her over to their team.
