9:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘The Voice’!” In episode 9, the battles continued. On Team Reba Josh Sanders defeated and eliminated Donny Van Slee. On Team Chance Serenity Arce defeated and eliminated Bri Fletcher. Next, Dani Stacy defeated and eliminated Corey Curtis. On Team Dan + Shay Kyle Schuesler defeated Madison Curbelo, but the coaches used their playoff pass on Madison, keeping her on their team. Next, Ducote Talmage defeated and eliminated Ryan Coleman. On Team Legend Gene Taylor defeated and eliminated Ronnie Wilson. Next, Jackie Romeo defeated Olivia Rubini, but Dan + Shay used their steal, pulling Olivia over to their team. Let’s see how the battles end!

9:08 p.m. — The night begins with Team Reba’s Elyscia Jefferson against Ashley Bryant. These two have very different musical influences, but both are thrilled to be on the Queen of Country’s team. Reba has chosen a Beyoncé song that she’s covered herself, “If I Were a Boy.” Reba says she connected to the song because she came from a “man’s world” and had to learn how to demand respect. During rehearsals Reba decides to raise the key a half step because she’s concerned both performers are playing around with the melody too much. “It’s a rangey song, you can’t half-sing it,” she says.

9:15 p.m. — Following the stage performance, Chance likens it to watching Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey sing “When You Believe.” It was a face-off that did the song justice. He gives the edge to Elyscia because of her stage presence. Dan + Shay say they both crushed it, but Elyscia might have the best vocal control in the competition. John says Elyscia has “cool stylistic choices” and Ashley had big notes “ringing through the room.” John says Ashley gave the better vocal performance in this battle. Reba commends them both for tackling this difficult song, but chooses Ashley as the winner. Reba chose Ashley because she’s continuously improving and is so coachable. Elyscia heads home earlier than expected.

9:25 p.m. — Team Legend is up next with Mafe vs. Rivers Grayson performing a duet of “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor and Carole King. John got special permission to do a bilingual version of this song so Mafe can showcase her Venezuelan heritage. John says they’re both subtle, gentle vocalists and that’s why he paired them up. He didn’t really have many notes during rehearsal.

9:35 p.m. — Following the battle Reba tells Rivers his tone made her relax. Mafe had a lot of depth, so Reba would go with her. Dan + Shay like Rivers’ tone and vibrato, but Mafe has a strong sense of identity. The coaching duo splits their votes on who they would choose as the winner. John compliments Rivers for singing low, quiet and on pitch. He said it was perfect. He’s impressed with Mafe’s gift and says she has a great future ahead of her. The winner of this battle is Mafe. John thinks she is one of the best artists this season.

9:40 p.m. — Team Dan + Shay is up next with Anya True taking on AJ Harvey. Dan + Shay assigned them “Half of My Heart” by John Mayer because it’s one of Shay’s favorite songs of all time. In rehearsals they say the song leans more towards AJ’s style, but if Anya sees that as an opportunity it will allow her to cut through. They tell AJ to remain true to the melody and Anya to “lean in” to her “whimsical” style. Following their battle (we only caught a portion of it) Dan + Shay declare Anya the winner because she’s only 17 and has “intangible star power.”

9:50 p.m. — The final battle is a tough one for Team Chance and John is waiting in the wings with the final steal. So who will Chance keep? And who will John steal? The two artists are Val T. Webb vs. RLETTO and they look a little intimidated to be singing “Saving All My Love For You” by Whitney Houston. Val is a big Whitney fan, but admits her songs are intimidating because she’s an icon known as “the greatest of all time.” Chance loves that RLETTO is a true tenor with a smooth tone. He says Val is an improvisational vocalist who reminds him of Anita Baker. Chance tells Val she sounds “reserved” and she needs to show off her confidence.

10:00 p.m. — Following this hard-fought battle with an ultimate power ballad, the coaches are on their feet. Dan calls it one of the most iconic performances he’s ever seen. They compliment Val’s voice and say RLETTO is a star with a “signature tone.” John says RLETTO has an artistic point of view, while Val’s voice is pure and beautiful. Reba says Val reminded all of them why she got a four-chair turn and she could listen to her all day long. She loves RLETTO’s style, but Val slays Reba with her vocals. In the end, Chance chooses RLETTO as the winner of this battle and John welcomes Val to Team Legend with open arms. Next week the Knockouts begin!
