8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘The Voice’!” In the season premiere, Reba began her rookie season alongside veterans Niall, John and Gwen. The country legend snagged the first contestant of the night, country vocalist Jordan Rainer as well as Jackson Snelling. Joining Team Gwen were Joslynn Rose and Kristen Brown. Team Legend recruited just one artist, Deejay Young. Niall hopes Sophia Hoffman, Alexa Wildish and Olivia Minogue can help him continue his coaching winning streak this season. The episode ended with four-chair turn Mara Justine pondering which team to join. Let’s get her decision now!

8:01 p.m. – It was no surprise that once John ascended the stage to duet with Mara that she wound up choosing to join his team. It was a huge get for Team John who pulled their first four chair turn of the season.

8:02 p.m. – Hailing from small town of 68 people in Missouri, 16 year old Ruby Leigh was the next artist to sing for the judges. Ruby’s version of “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart” with her expert yodeling got the attention of John first, but then all three of the other coaches followed with button hits of their own. John told her that he’s never heard anything like her voice and that it was “clear and precise.” Gwen called it cool, admitting that Ruby yodels better than she does and that they’d work really well together. Niall liked her energy and thought her power for a teenager is “insane.” Reba told Ruby that she’s proud of their heritage that she was bringing yodeling and country western music to the show. Reba went to the audience and asked for them to chant for the coach Ruby should join — naturally they all pushed her to choose Reba with Reba hand paddles and that’s just what she did.

8:11 p.m.Juliette Ojeda grew up learning to sing by ear, listening to the salsa and mariachi music that her father would play. For her audition she wanted to merge genres in her Spanish-English mixed language salsa version of “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” When it seemed as though none of the coaches were going to turn, suddenly Gwen, Niall and then Reba all hit their buttons to fight for Juliette. Gwen offered Juliette that she can help her gain more control over the performance, Niall appreciated that she brought bilingual singing to the stage, and Reba said she can help with audience communication. Gwen pushed the hardest for Juliette to join her team and that worked out since Juliette went in that direction.

8:22 p.m. – Before we advanced to the next audition, Howie Mandel jumped out of the audience screaming for Reba and demanding her autograph.

8:23 p.m. – Thankfully Howie didn’t delay us too much and 13 year old Julia Roome was able to deliver “Dream a Little Dream of Me” for the coaches. Niall turned his chair early and may have even thought he’d get a free pass to bringing Julia on board, but Gwen jumped in at the last second with a turn of her own. Niall made sure Julia was aware that he won last season with another young female artist with “a unique tone.” Gwen thought Julia was “very soulful” and that she sings from her heart. John supported Gwen’s claim because he’s seen her work with younger artists before. Julia defied John’s advice and went with her gut instead to join Team Niall.

8:33 p.m. – Long term substitute teacher Ayvio came to the show in order to support his kids’ own dreams of reaching big. His audition to “Forget You” was an exciting choice, but the coaches didn’t bite. John let him know that Ayvio didn’t “give that fire” in his performance and that it would have benefitted from some grit and growl.

8:43 p.m. – While John and Gwen showed Niall the Winner’s Room backstage, 19 year old Jenna Marquis prepared her audition to “Teenage Dirtbag.” Gwen and Niall were most excited about the song choice so it didn’t take long for them to turn their chairs; John was the third coach to turn moments later. Once again, Gwen stressed how much she wants to work with young women on her team and told Jenna it would be one of the best life decisions she makes. Niall called the performance “explosive” and thinks she made a difficult song effortless. John noticed the slow vibrato of her performance and likened her to Billie and Rihanna in different moments. Jenna wasn’t sure which team she wanted to join, but ultimately followed the feeling that she should join Team Gwen.

8:54 p.m. – The final audition of the night came from passionate horseback rider Ephraim Owen with “Beneath Your Beautiful.” Immediately, Niall, Gwen and John were interested in his first notes, prompting simultaneous chair turns from Niall and Gwen. John jumped in a little later and then Reba made it an official four chair turn close to the end of the track. Gwen noted the rock and soul aspects to his voice. Niall could feel the “angst” in his voice and liked that he chose a big song because he’s a big singer. Reba called it “an honor” to hear his “explosive” and “dynamic” voice. John appreciated the “urgency” in his voice, calling it “powerful” and “mesmerizing” to execute the song in that way. After bringing his daughter on stage for a short duet of John’s song “Nervous,” Ephraim selected John as his coach, giving him a second four chair turn equal to Reba’s tally.
