9:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘The Voice’!” In episode 9, the coaches continued refining their teams in the battles. On Team Reba Alison Albrecht defeated Angelina Nazarian and Ms. Monét defeated CORii (stolen by Gwen). On Team Niall Julia Roome defeated Olivia Eden. On Team Gwen Bias defeated Jacquie Roar (stolen by Reba) and Kristen Brown defeated Juliette Ojeda. On Team Legend Stee defeated Willie Gomez. Let’s continue the battles!

9:02 p.m. – Team Niall started the night with the battle between Sophia Hoffman and Nini Iris on “Heart of Glass,” a song he described as being all about “energy and dynamics.” Niall thought the song was out of Sophia’s wheelhouse, but she is a powerful enough singer to take it on. He said that Nini is a “sassy rock diva” that makes sense for the song. In his notes at rehearsal, he wanted them to tell the story of it being a “heartwrencher” in the lyric.

9:09 p.m. – Gwen said that their performance didn’t feel “at all like a battle,” calling Nini’s runs “precise” and Sophia’s sound “rich.” John added that they both seemed like they were “in their element” and it was evident they were committed to having fun. He appreciated that they delivered in stage performance as well as vocally. Reba enjoyed it because of their confidence and it was a lot of fun for them and the audience. Niall said Sophia showed perseverance coming back to the show and that Nini mesmerizes every time she performs. Begging that another coach uses a steal, Niall went with his gut and selected Nini as his personal winner.

9:20 p.m. – Team Gwen entered rehearsals next for Calla Prejean and Chechi Sarai to work through their rendition of “I’ll Never Love Again” Gwen wanted to see vulnerability from both of them and said that it won’t be only about singing, but about the delivery. She likes that Calla is a believable singer and that Chechi can effortlessly slide through her runs. Her advice to Chechi was to “be a person that we want to get to know” instead of trying “to be a singer” and to Calla to pull back from her dynamics in order to show more soft elements.

9:30 p.m. – John took issue with Calla’s performance because she didn’t know how to build the song through to the end, but called Chechi “exceptionally gifted” and thought she was great throughout. Reba agreed that Chechi has an “incredible” voice and that Calla complimented her with “tender” whisper notes that drew her in. Niall called it “magic,” and agreed with Reba that Calla’s whisper was “tasteful” and thought there were moments when Chechi was unsure of herself. Gwen said that “everything” Calla did was “perfection” while she still noticed the “little insecure part” of Chechi that she wants to get out of her. Forced to choose, Gwen kept Chechi on her team because she “has what it takes.”

9:37 p.m. – We got short glimpses of two battles for Team Legend. The first was between Talakai and Caleb Sasser on “Too Good at Goodbyes” where John picked Caleb as the winner for his “intriguing and mysterious” tone. The second was between Jarae Womack and Lila Forde on “Killing Me Softly with His Song” where Lila was chosen for the “unique magic” to her musical expression.

9:43 p.m. – Team Reba took the stage next with Rachele Nguyen and Mac Royals taking on “How Deep Is Your Love.” Reba paired them together because they’re both in the R&B space and she thought they could play off of each other’s softness. Reba pointed out to them that the reason she picked that song for them was because the audience wants to be familiar with what they’re hearing and so she cautioned them against changing the melody too much.

9:52 p.m. – Niall called them “brave” for taking on such a well-known song, but told Mac that he had a couple pitch issues that he was able to correct in their harmonies. He was surprised by how good Rachele was because he didn’t remember her being as good in the auditions. Gwen is a fan of Mac’s “warm and buttery” voice, but she, too, was surprised by Rachele because of how good her instincts are at the age of 17. John called the sound of Mac’s voice “gorgeous” for its “richness and character” and thought Rachele did “so many exciting things” with the song. Reba’s thoughts were that Rachele showed “enthusiasm” and lamented that she was thrown by Mac’s insistence that they changed the melody at the beginning. For her decision, Reba selected Rachele because she’s a “package all the way around.” Before Mac could say anything to Reba, John hit his steal button and grabbed him for his own team.
