The most well-known coach rivalry ever on “The Voice” was between Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, with their insults and barbs lasting a full 16 seasons until Adam’s departure. The two music superstars later reunited on the NBC reality TV show and seemed to squash their old beef. Now that Blake has left the show, it appears as though a new rivalry has reared its ugly head on the current 24th season between John Legend and Niall Horan.

During the October 2 episode, both coaches ended up blocking each other at different moments: John blocked Niall during Stee‘s blind audition, and then Niall later returned the favor during Rudi‘s performance. Below, let’s take a look at how each of the blocks played out on “The Voice” Season 24.

Stee, the son of musician parents who grew up singing with his sister, was the first artist to audition on Monday night. Coincidentally, he performed “Sugar” by Adam’s band Maroon 5, so perhaps it was written in the stars that John, who now sits in Adam’s seat, would use his block and trigger the feud. All four coaches turned for Stee (the others being Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani), but the young artist likely already knew he was going to join Team Legend. After all, he told an emotional story about his cousin who passed away and was a huge fan of John’s.

“Niall and I, we have a budding rivalry,” John declared later on. “This young whippersnapper comes to ‘The Voice.’ He wins his first season. He thinks he’s the king over here. But I’m the O.G. This is my eighth season. And I’m not letting him take the throne.”

Niall conceded, “It was tough to be blocked by John, there’s no about that. I really wanted Stee on my team. But I still have my block in my back pocket. So revenge will come swiftly, Mr. Legend.”

That “revenge” arrived at the end of the episode, when Rudi from Texas received a four-chair turn from all of the coaches. She has worked various jobs at her family’s auto body shop, but everyone is clear that she really should be a performer. During Rudi’s rendition of “You Don’t Own Me,” Niall sneakily watched to see if John was going to hit his button, and when it looked like he was, Niall slammed his hand down on his block. Ultimately it didn’t work out in Niall’s favor, as Rudi decided to go with Gwen instead, which meant he used his block for no reason.

“Listen, Niall had some beginner’s luck last season, but I think he still has a lot to learn,” John told the camera. He later was seen shouting, “What a waste of a block, I love it!” to poor Niall.

Niall sighed and added, “I lost big time to Gwen Stefani, but I’m glad I got John.” He admitted that he spent “90 seconds” hovering over his button, but that it ended up being “a waste of time.”

On “The Voice” winners list, John Legend won Season 16 with Maelyn Jarmon, Gwen Stefani won Season 19 with Carter Rubin, and Niall Horan won Season 23 won Gina Miles, so they are all tied at one victory apiece. This is Reba McEntire’s first season as a coach.
