As The Voice continued its Season 24 Battles Monday evening, one of them darn near claimed coach Reba McEntire as a casualty. After hearing Corii and Ms. Monét tear up Patti LaBelle’s “New Attitude” in rehearsal, the country legend mock-fell to the floor — which seemed a pretty apropos reaction, actually. How’d the twosome do when it counted? And who else gave performances that should’ve come with a side of smelling salts? Read on…

Team Gwen: BIAS (Grade: B+) defeated Jacquie Roar (Grade: A) on “Need a Favor” — Jacquie stolen by Reba | Gwen hoped that the energy of these two country singers would bounce off of one another’s, and boy, did it. Not only did the teammates squeeze every ounce of life out of Jelly Roll’s hit, they sounded kinda amazing doing so, too. The song was absolutely perfect for BIAS’ tangy vocals, and although Jacquie definitely has the more powerful voice, he’s the more interesting performer, so I’d have had to have given him the win.

Team Reba: Alison Albrecht (Grade: A-) defeated Angelina Nazarian (Grade: B) on “You Say” | Wow. These two really lived Lauren Daigle’s song on that stage. Their performances were captivating, especially at first. Initially, I leaned toward Angelina; her voice cut so sharply through the air. But by the end, I was all about Alison, whose vocal was more steeped in emotion. Maybe Angelina lost me when she made a muscle to punctuate the word “strong.”

Team Niall: Julia Roome (Grade: C-) defeated Olivia Eden (Grade: C) on “Kiss Me” | Sixpence None the Richer’s ballad — which is older than either contestant, BTW — deserved better than this Battle. Maybe the contest’s teenage “babies” were super nervous. Julia was bedeviled by pitch issues; like, she was so off, I fear she couldn’t even see “on” from where she was. Niall disagreed, obviously, but I thought Olivia fared at least a little bit better and had the more ear-catching, unusual voice.

Team Legend: Stee (Grade: B+) defeated Willie Gomez (Grade: A) on “Tacones Rojos” | On their coach’s duet with Sebastián Yatra, the four-chair turns detonated a wholly enjoyable explosion of energy. Stee brought his A game, or at least his B+ game, and personality plus. Willie, on the other hand… the dancer demonstrated the well-punctuated moves, the vocal firepower, the charisma of a bona-fide pop heartthrob. When he started that rapid-fire rap, it was all over, if only in my mind; he was the clear winner. Couldn’t believe he wasn’t stolen.

Team Gwen: Kristen Brown (Grade: A-) defeated Juliette Ojeda (Grade: B) on “That’s the Way It Is” | Considering the way it devolved into a shout-off, I’m not sure any of us would call this rendition of Celine Dion’s smash… pleasurable. It did allow us to hear the big difference between the singers, though. They’re actually both strong, with Juliette having the voice you could more easily pick out of a crowd. But whereas her vocal has a point at which it has to cry uncle, Kristen’s doesn’t seem to. It just kept going, ever larger and more powerful.

Team Reba: Ms. Monét (Grade: A) defeated Corii (Grade: B+) on “New Attitude” — Corii stolen by Gwen| “Jiminy Christmas!” Reba exclaimed when she heard these two go at it in rehearsal. Corii’s voice was so massive, it could’ve blown down the walls. Then Ms. M opened her mouth, and damn, she would not be denied; amazing vocal power and trickery. On stage, Corii looked kinda wild-eyed and overcaffeinated, but her pipes certainly didn’t let her down. Ms. Monét was superior, however. She was up there letting loose jaw-dropping notes as casually and naturally as if she was just saying hey.
