'The Voice' recap: Nick Jonas attempts two unsuccessful steals; players prefer fellow coaches

Spoiler alert! This story contains details from the April 13 episode of "The Voice."

Monday was just not Nick Jonas' night.

The newest "Voice" coach twice attempted to swipe eliminated contestants during Knockouts only to be thwarted by his colleagues.

First, Jonas and John Legend competed for one of the fallen from Team Kelly.

The “A Moment Like This” singer faced the impossible: choosing between CammWess (previously stolen from Legend) and Megan Danielle, who performed a rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece by Piece.”

The talk show host co-wrote the track, taking inspiration from her strained relationship with her father, whose death she revealed to Forbes last year. Clarkson fell to the floor when Danielle said during rehearsals with Mega Mentor James Taylor that she related to the track.

Danielle said her dad walked out when she was 7 and her grandfather stepped up in his place.

"You are, like, Oprah-ing me right now," Clarkson said, becoming emotional. She was moved by Danielle rehearsing her performance as well. "I'm gonna need James to talk first …" Clarkson said when her team member finished.

Clarkson continued to be touched during the in-studio showdown. She said both CammWess, who sang A Great Big World's "Say Something,” and Danielle made her cry.

Clarkson chose Danielle as the winner, leaving CammWess for the taking. Jonas immediately hit his buzzer, multiple times, and Legend also wanted the chance to have the contender back on his squad. Jonas attempted the block.

"I'mma jump in right away and say the same thing I've said to any friend that was ever getting back with an ex: Why? Why would you do that?" he said, making his case and delighting the audience.

Legend argued that some couples who reunite "get married and they live happily ever after," but Clarkson and Blake Shelton quickly shot down that theory.

"I would love for you to come back home to team Legend!" the crooner tried again. "You were born for this team!"

Legend's persuasion worked. CammWess decided, "I want to go back home."

Jonas made a second attempt at a steal following the last Knockout of the night, which pitted Legend's Zan Fiskum and Joanna Serenko (originally on Jonas' team) against each other.

For Legend, Fiskum, who sang Brandi Carlile's "The Story" edged out Serenko, who chose the Bonnie Raitt version of John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery."

Jonas and Shelton hoped to scoop up Serenko. Jonas even joked that he'd had a change of heart about exes giving it another go.

"I made an argument before about getting back with an ex and how, how bad that is," he said, generating laughter from the crowd. "But I would love to complete the circle here. It would be great for us to get back together."

Shelton attempted to turn the dating analogy in his favor. "I don't play games with you, like Nick does," he said. "I don't beg you and convince you to be on my team just to turn around and dump you."

For Serenko, her journey with Jonas had run its course. "We had a great run. But I think I just need to move on," she told her former coach.

Shelton relished his victory. "I love that as a 43-year-old man, I can say that a girl left Nick Jonas for me."
