SHEBOYGAN — Sheboygan Theatre Company invites audiences to give in to love rather than live in fear with the beloved characters of “RENT” to close out the company’s 90th season.

Directed by Ryan Schabach, “RENT” will feature 17 cast members and will run May 10-18 at Leslie W. Johnson Theatre at Horace Mann Middle School.

“We have so many talented singers in our area," said Tricia Roberts, STC executive director, in a news release. "‘RENT’ is the perfect opportunity to showcase them. There aren’t very many shows that offer our actors the range 'RENT' provides. If you loved Into the Woods, you need to see this show. I can’t wait to see what Ryan will do with it.”

"RENT" is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical created by Jonathon Larson. The show allows a glimpse into the lives of a group of New York City residents struggling to survive and make ends meet in the height of the AIDS crisis in the 1990s.

The show blends rock, jazz and Broadway music to explore survival, love, loss, addiction and more.

Alongside the director, Zach Holden is the musical director of the show and Amanda Hartlaub is the choreographer.

Schabach is a member of Actors’ Equity and has experience in directing, fight choreography and playwriting. In the release, Schabach said directing the show and watching the actors shine is a step toward being the change he wishes to see in the world.

“It has always been a dream of mine to one day return to the area I grew up in and share with this community the power of live theatre,” he said. “I am so honored that the leadership at STC has enlisted me to helm 'RENT,' the musical that changed my life, taught me empathy, and ushered forward a professional career in theater.”

The show will begin at 7 p.m. May 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18. On May 12 and 18, the show will start at 2 p.m.

American Sign Language interpreters will be available at the 2 p.m. May 18 show.

Tickets are available for purchase on the STC website. The show is rated R.
