A prize-winning young violinist will give a free Mother’s Day recital Sunday afternoon at the Royal Poinciana Chapel.
Hao Zhou, a Californian who was a Grand Laureate of the prestigious Montreal International Violin Competition and a first-prize winner of the Banff String Quartet Competition, will perform works from a wide variety of composers and periods.
Accompanied by pianist Gregory Ritchey, associate conductor and chorus master at Palm Beach Opera, Zhou will play a sonata by Mozart (K. 378), the “Romanian Folk Dances” of Bela Bartok, the Violin Sonata No. 3 of Edvard Grieg, plus pieces by Dvořák and Brahms. Also on the program is Gershwin’s “Three Preludes,” and the lovely “Mother and Child,” a miniature by the American composer William Grant Still.
Zhou appeared at the chapel in recital in April 2023, and is a founding member of the Viano String Quartet, which was featured on the Flagler Museum music series in February 2023.
Admission is free for the 4 p.m. concert at the chapel, 60 Cocoanut Row. For more information, please call 561-655-4212.
