Vimeo Launches New Apps for Apple TV, Android TV and Samsung Smart TVs

IAC-owned video service Vimeo has launched new apps for Apple TV, Android TV and Samsung smart TVs Wednesday, putting a bigger spotlight on some of the service’s best videos. The apps are available effective immediately through the app stores of compatible devices.

This is the first time Vimeo has built a native app for Apple’s tvOS store, and the first time the service has had an HTML5 app on Samsung smart TVs.

Still missing from the new slate of apps is any access to in-app purchases, something that Vimeo added to its Roku app earlier this year. However, Vimeo Senior Product Manager Will True told Variety this week that the company is focused on adding access to premium content to its other TV apps as well in preparation of launching its own subscription video service.

Vimeo announced last month that it was going to introduce its own subscription service, and spend “tens of millions of dollars” on exclusive content for it. However, there’s no word yet on when the new paid service is going to launch, or how it plans to compete with dozens of other paid video services.
