‘The View’s Whoopi Goldberg & Sara Haines Defend Jo Koy Amid Golden Globes Hosting Backlash

Jo Koy has been heavily criticized following his turn as host at last night’s Golden Globes. Following Sunday night’s ceremony, The View discussed the show during the “Hot Topics” segment with Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines defending the comedian’s talents.

Although Goldberg said she didn’t watch the award ceremony, she did share a comment based on her experience as host of events like this.

“These hosting gigs are brutal,” Goldberg said. “If you don’t know the room, if you’ve not been in these rooms before and you’re thrust out there, it’s hit or miss.”

Goldberg continued, “I love Jo Koy, he makes me crazy because he’s funny. I don’t know whether it was the room, I don’t know whether it was the jokes, I didn’t get to see it. But I do know, that he is as good as it gets when it comes to stand-ups and it is not an easy gig.”

The ABC Daytime talk show host reminded her fellow co-hosts that “if you read any of the reviews of some of the gigs I’ve had where they wished me into the cornfields… it’s not an easy gig.”

Ana Navarro jumped in, saying she did watch the Golden Globes and said Koy “wasn’t funny to me.”

Haines chimed in, saying she loved the comedian and was “nervous for him because I think he is so funny.” However, she said she was more bothered by people who didn’t have a sense of humor about Koy’s jokes on stage.

“We need to protect these national treasures called our comedians because life needs them. We need to stop binding them in [and] fencing them in,” Haines continued. “In that room, Jo Koy is punching up. No one feels sorry. Just smile.”

Alyssa Farah Griffin agreed with Haines and said Koy has been one of her favorite guests on The View.

“I think he’s such an inherently nice person that doing more of a roast is not natural for him, whereas Ricky Gervais will just go in and knock people over,” Griffin said before adding she thought Koy “got better as the night went on.”

Koy has addressed the criticism over his hosting gig at the Golden Globes saying it was “a tough room,” a “hard job” and a “hard, hard gig.”
