“The View” star Joy Behar took audience member's glasses in off-camera 'mug chaos' moment

Cohost Sara Haines and producer Brian Teta recalled how an audience Q&A turned into a hilarious bartering session for one audience member's eyewear.

After grappling with phantom noises and water spillages stemming from nefarious cups across the last year, The View finally harnessed the power of tabletop drinking vessels for good on Tuesday, with cohost Joy Behar reportedly taking an audience member's glasses in exchange for one of the talk show's legendary goblets emblazoned with drawings of the current panelists' faces.

Producer Brian Teta revealed on the series' companion Behind the Table podcast that, during a recent audience Q&A, the 81-year-old comedian bartered for eyewear worn by a woman watching the show's broadcast live in the studio.

"Can we talk about this commercial break mug chaos that happened today with Joy? The best show on television is when the cameras aren't rolling here. A little behind-the-scenes, we taped Tyler Perry earlier in the morning, so when that rolled into the show, we were doing Q&A with the audience," Teta told cohost Sara Haines, who further elaborated on the hilarious moment.

Haines recalled moderator Whoopi Goldberg interrupting a conversation to tell the audience member that she noticed her "totally fly" glasses. It turned out that the woman was one of four sisters who scored seats on the risers, and Haines said the group then engaged in active bargaining with Goldberg.

"It starts to be a back-and-forth, the woman wants to give Whoopi the glasses, then Joy asks for them, the woman ends up giving her the glasses," Haines said. "Joy didn't feel she could take those without giving something back, so she starts to wipe off her mug, she's like, 'I'm going to give her my mug.'"

Haines said all of the cohosts — including herself, Behar, Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin — signed the mug. But, things didn't end there.

"All of a sudden, the baby sister, who was not the one that gave the glasses, dominates the whole thing and says, 'These sisters wouldn't be here if I weren't here,'" Haines said. "We proceed to sign four mugs to make sure every sibling walks out taken care of."

Without cups in-hand, the cohosts had to finish the segment with red Solo cups, given to them by another producer, Haines recalled.

EW has reached out to a representative for Behar for comment.

The sweet conclusion marked a high point for The View's relationship to its historically mischievous chalices, after a mug (or Haines' pants, or Goldberg's mouth – the mystery remains unsolved) seemingly made raspberry noises live on air earlier this year, prompting the show to introduce coasters on the Hot Topics table shortly thereafter.

In March, Haines demonstrated that the show's old blue mugs often scratched the glass table and created annoying noises.

"We get blamed for dropping gas," Goldberg said at the time. "When in fact it's a cup."

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
