The women of “The View” discussed their thoughts on the death penalty on Thursday morning, particularly as it applies to the case of the Parkland school shooter. For host Ana Navarro, this is a time when the death penalty should be imposed — especially since some of the parents of victims are calling for it.

The hosts unanimously agreed that when a heinous crime is committed against children, as in the case of Parkland and so many other mass shootings, the heaviest penalty possible should be brought upon the perpetrator of the crime. Navarro noted that right now, some Parkland parents are advocating for the death penalty, and that their thoughts should be the only ones that matter.

“I care more about how the families feel than I care about this guy being trapped or not being trapped,” Navarro said, referring to the alternative of him spending life in prison. “And if the families are telling me that the way they’re going to get closure is by him being put to the death penalty, then so be it. Because the priority, for me, is the families that had those lives stolen from them.”

Speaking more generally, host Joy Behar admitted, “I’m sort of for the death penalty in some cases. I know that that’s not what people would think I would be for but I am. I mean, I don’t believe in an afterlife particularly, so I think they should be taken out if they’ve done the worst thing and the DNA can show it.”

Whoopi Goldberg added that not only should people who commit crimes against children be severely punished, but so should people who assault elderly folks.

“For me, it’s not a tough call. If you harm a child, you’re done. That’s it,” Whoopi said. “Because they can’t really fight you. It’s like these people who run across the street and punch old people in the face and knock them to the street and leave them there like trash. They can’t fight you. Do it somebody who will punch your behind back. If you’re going to do that, don’t go to some old 78, 79, 80, 90-year-old person who’s made it this far. And here you come punching them and knocking them down.”

That said, her solution wasn’t necessarily the death penalty.

“See, to me, somebody should put you in jail and punch you every day,” Whoopi added. “Every day.”
