Video Premiere: Maroon 5's PJ Morton Debuts 'Everything's Gonna Be Alright'

Fans of Maroon 5 probably know PJ Morton best for his duties as the band’s pop-powerhouse keyboardist — however, Morton is a solo artist of major weight, having won both Grammy and Dove awards for his work as a singer- songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

Yahoo Music is excited to premiere the video for his song “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright (ft. BJ The Chicago Kid and The HamilTones),” from his recent album Gumbo. The video was directed by Cinemadona — who is best known for her cinematography work for Beyoncé’s Lemonade.

Morton relocated from his Los Angeles base to record Gumbo in his hometown of New Orleans at the Parlor Recording Studio, composing on vintage keyboards, Moog bass, and more to create a unique mix of R&B, hip-hop, and soul.

“When I got back [to New Orleans], everything went into second gear, because I was in my element,” he explains. “I was away from any expectations. I had a warm welcome from the culture and the community. It really freed me. Even though it’s where I was born and raised and the name of my last record was New Orleans, this is actually the first album I’ve made here! That played a huge part in the development. Musically, I could say what I wanted to say.”

Morton also recruited some of his longtime friends and collaborators to join him such as Mutemath’s Darren King [drums], Keyon Harrold [trumpet], Chris Payton [guitar], DJ Raymond [bass], Brian Cockerham [bass], Matt Jones [arranger], and Big Ed Clark [drums].

“When people hear Gumbo, I want them to take away that being original is cool again,” he notes. “These are real melodies, instruments, and songs. The only thing I’m chasing is who I am. That’s why I came home and this album is what it is.”
